The dung beetle is a specific variety of scarab beetle, known for subsisting at least partially on faecal matter. The dung beetle (specifically Scarabaeus sacer) was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians, as Ronald Weasley noted when Hermione Granger stated the Egyptians worshipped cats.[1] Giant dung beetles were a known magical related species to their smaller cousins.[2]
When the Dursleys locked away his possessions in the cupboard under the stairs during the summer of 1992, Harry Potter noted that the only thing stopping them from locking him up as well was a fear he might turn them into dung beetles.[3]
