- "Potions lessons took place down in one of the dungeons. It was colder here than up in the main castle, and would have been quite creepy enough without the pickled animals floating in glass jars all around the walls."
- — Description[src]
The dungeons of Hogwarts Castle were located under Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and it was colder there than in the main castle.[1] The Potions classroom was located in the dungeons,[1] as was the entrance to the Slytherin common room.[2] The dungeons were also once used as places of detention according to Argus Filch, where misbehaving students would be hung from their thumbs in the dungeons.[3]

Portraits & Statues[]
A Sleeping dragon statue stood at the entrance to the dungeons during the 1890–1891 school year.[16]
Elizabeth Burke's portrait was hung here in the 1995–1996 school year, connecting it with the Entrance Dungeon. She gave special passage to the main dungeons to Slytherins who said the password "Slytherins are supreme".[13]
Professor Basil Fronsac's portrait was hung here in the 1996–1997 school year, connecting it with the Grand Staircase.[12]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the first versions of the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the dungeon is very dirty, filled with spiders and loads of gooey ponds, it also shows that it is a long walk to the classroom. The dungeons classroom is really just downstairs when you enter the Dungeons.
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, all of the Slytherins were sent to the Dungeons until they escaped at the start of the Battle of Hogwarts. However, this is not canon, as Minerva McGonagall does not send Slytherins into the dungeons in the book, as she instead orders those unwilling to fight to leave the school.
