Eclipse report in the Daily Prophet
An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when a celestial body is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another body, or by having another body pass between it and the viewer.[1]
History[]
1890s[]
There was a stained glass window depicting an eclipse in the West Tower of Hogwarts Castle.[2]
1980s[]
- "We can make use of this Orrery to predict the next eclipse."
- — Professor Sinistra to her Astronomy students[src]
Jacob's sibling predicting an eclipse in Astronomy
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Professor Aurora Sinistra would have her sixth-year and seventh-year students in Astronomy at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry attempt to magically predict eclipses using an Orrery and their wand in the Astronomy Tower.[3][4][5]
The Daily Prophet once reported on an eclipse that was predicted to occur between 3 December and 7 December in an unknown year.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
- Hogwarts, being located in the Scottish Highlands, could have witnessed the annular solar eclipses of 1921 and 2003 in their entirety, as well as very deep partial solar eclipses in 1925, 1927, 1954 and 2015. Lunar eclipses, whether total, partial or penumbral, occur far more frequently.
