Edgar Hexsmith was a pure-blood wizard and the father of Jenna Hexsmith.[5]
Biography[]
Edgar was born into the pure-blood Hexsmith family.[2] Edgar took so much pride in being a Hexsmith, that he used to carve a rune pattern that came from his family crest into everything he used.[5]
Hogwarts years[]
At age eleven, in 1981, Edgar began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Gryffindor house.[4] From the beginning of his education, Edgar constantly emerged as the most outstanding student in every class. While others struggle to accept the path to excellence, Edgar saw this unattainable fruits as rightfully his to claim. Making him one of the names destined to shine during the 1980s. This naturally made him exceptionally popular among his housemates. Remarkably, even among the other three houses, jealousy or dislike towards him was rare. Edgar's skills in managing interpersonal relationships perhaps surpassed even his impressive academic talent.[6]
During his years as a student, Edgar used to dive into the Black Lake, assisted to Deathday parties and discovered some secret passages, which he would later tell to his daughter Jenna Hexsmith. He also found the Mirror of Erised.[7] Edgar was active in plenty of clubs, but was never quite attached to any group, always involved but never the leader of anything.[8] Edgar was always surrounded by admires with eager expressions—hoping to impress him, he never consider them friends or was particularly close to any of them.[7]
In his third year, Edgar attracted the attention of another admirer, a Hufflepuff student who considered him brilliant, and Edgar gifted him a Gobstone set even though they had just met.[9]
During this year, Edgar was invited to join the Gryffindor Quidditch team as a chaser. The thrill of commanding hundreds of students's emotions with every moved he made was an irresistible temptation for him. He envisioned himself becoming Quidditch captain, a source of pride for his house, adding an unparalleled glory to his record. But reality had other plans. During training sesions, Edgar noted that the Gryffindor Seeker was nor very skilled. Yet, he dismissed the Seeker's importance and resolved to score sufficiently to ensure Gryffindor's victory over Slytherin.[6]
During the match, Gryffindor's inept Seeker hesitated, allowing the Slytherin Seeker to seize the Snitch, ending the game. Gryffindor lost, 170 to 100. Edgar was unprepared for this defeat, he realised that his exceptional talent meant nothing in Quidditch if undermined by another's failure. With anger, he concluded team sports were fundamentally unsuitable for him. The night before his next match, Edgar created the perfect conditions to leave the team. During practice, the clumsy Seeker mistook a glint from Edgar's watch for the Snitch, colliding with him and knocking him off his broom. Edgar landed badly, and broke his collarbone and arm. He was rushed to the Hospital Wing, where Madam Pomfrey fixed him, yet insisted he stayed and rest for a full day.[6]
Teammates and admires alike visited him, and gave him the news of Gryffindor's defeat. Edgar listen to their disappointments and frustrations, but never joined or disagreed with their comments on the Seeker. Two weeks later, he submitted a carefully worded resignation letter. And not long after, the Seeker too quietly withdrew from the team. No one blamed Edgar, if anything, his reputation and popularity only grew stronger. Edgar firmly resolved to pursue only personal triumphs, declining with suitable excuses any further group activities.[6]
In his next school year, Edgar continued to play Gobstones near the lake. In one occasion, one of his Gobstones hit third year student Clodagh Dromgoole in the head, while she was in a Care of Magical Creatures class.[8]
Edgar participated in the Hogwarts Gobstones Tournament, and was considered a top contender. His involvement attracted a lot of students - not only Gobstones players, but many spectators.[8] Everyone expected him to win, as he was a very proficient Gobstones player; unbeknownst to everyone, he had enchanted his pieces with a cheating charm, and marked the enchanted pieces by carving a rune on them.[7] In the final match, Edgar faced a student from Hufflepuff who was one of the many that were always around him; unbeknownst to Edgar, he had been practising Gobstones relentlessly to prove that he could be a true friend to him, an equal. During the match, Edgar made almost impossible moves, but the student countered all of them flawlessly and won the tournament. Soon after, the idea that the champion had cheated began to spread.[8] Taking this to his advantage, Edgar made sure to disappear the cheating pieces before sending an anonymous report stating that there was in fact cheating in the tournament.[7] This report prompted an investigation by the professors, but when they went to the Gobstone Club to examine the pieces, they weren't there and the investigation never reached a conclusion.[8]
After the tournament, the student only got accusations and disgrace, and he was afraid that Edgar also believed the rumours of cheating and wrote him a letter. He asked him not to believe those rumours and that he wanted to remain being his friend.[7] But Edgar wanted to teach him a lesson, just like the Seeker, for embarrassing him at the tournament. Edgar responded by asking him to join him for a little stroll beneath the Black Lake. They met during a stormy night after curfew and dove into the lake. Edgar pushed him to go deeper and deeper, and the student never resurfaced. After a whole day, Edgar went into the lake to look for him and realised that the champion had indeed gone deeper and got himself dragged under by a torrent. Edgar eventually found his robes on the lake's floor and used a Transfiguration spell to change their colours to ensure that no one found out what happened to the boy.[10]
Adult life[]
Years after leaving Hogwarts, Edgar married a pure-blood witch, and they had a daughter together, named Jenna.[2] He taught her to play Gobstones and would often say witty lines to her, such as "A full coin pouch is earned, not conjured", which he had used a lot during his school days. He'd also say that "The Black Lake keeps its treasures well-hidden — but only those with the courage to dive will ever find them", which most likely motivated her to explore the lake as she eventually did. Edgar, who always had a way with words, would tell her stories of his time at Hogwarts, telling her of Deathday parties and secret passages, the Black Lake, and that he saw himself as himself when he looked into the Mirror of Erised.[7]
At some point in or after the 2010–2011 school year, a Muggle-born student found a small, antiquated pouch with a visible slit on the Great Lake floor. Inscribed on it was the name Edgar Hexsmith, causing the student to wonder if the pouch belonged to one of their school friend Jenna Hexsmith's siblings, assuming she had any.[11]
In the 2011–2012 school year, Professor Clodagh Dromgoole brought back the Hogwarts Gobstones Tournament because of the admiration she had in Edgar. The development of the tournament uncovered some past history about Edgar and the champion who beat him, and when one of his enchanted Gobstones was found, his daughter recognised the carved rune and wanted to return it to her father. After Jenna showed the Gobstone piece to Edgar, he got furious as she had never seen before. He asked her if someone made her give it to him, and told her to stop picking up trash from Hogwarts.[7]
Personality and traits[]
Edgar showed characteristics of being a narcissist; he liked being the best at everything and not being overshadowed by others or by their failures, like what happened with Quidditch. He thrived on attention, but during his hospital stay, he realised that having others feel pity for him was an intolerable idea.[6] After losing the Gobstones tournament, he also wanted to teach a lesson to the student that he considered had embarrassed him, but when he found out what happened to him, he covered his tracks instead, accusing him that what had happened was his fault for being too trusting.[10]
