- Ron Weasley: "How were the runes?"
- Hermione Granger: "I mistranslated ‘ehwaz,’. It means ‘partnership,’ not ‘defence,’ I mixed it up with ‘eihwaz."
- — Hermione Granger regarding her Ancient Runes O.W.L. written exam[src]
Eihwaz was a magical rune which meant "defence".[1]
History[]
This specific rune came up during the 1996 Ancient Runes O.W.L.s examination.[1] Hermione Granger confused it with ehwaz, another rune which meant "partnership",[1] but she still achieved an Outstanding.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- Eihwaz is actually the Germanic word for yew-tree, while ehwaz means horse.
- Like Ehwaz, Eihwaz is also a rune in the Futhark alphabet, representing defence, patience, waiting and calmness.
