The elephant is the largest land mammal on earth, characterised by its long trunk, tusks, big, flat ears, column-like legs, and greyish to brown skin.[1] There are two main extant species of elephant as of the 20th century, one (Loxodonta africana) native to Africa, the other (Elephas maximus) native to south and south-east Asia.[1]

An elephant was one possible corporeal form of the Patronus Charm.[2][3]

History

Hedley Fleetwood had a Patronus that took the form of a woolly mammoth, an extinct species of elephant, a rare example of someone having an extinct animal as a Patronus.[3]

Elephant on a Bicycle was the name of a magical sweet produced by Honeydukes that enabled the consumer to produce animal noises, including those of an elephant.[4]

In 1943, Horace Slughorn was said to shake his head an old elephant bothered by mosquitos while Tom Riddle was goading him about the nature of Horcruxes.[5]

In the summer of 1991, Harry Potter though that he would look like he was wearing bits of old elephant skin with his school uniform at Stonewall High, which his aunt Petunia's had made by dying pieces of Dudley's old clothing.[6]
