Ron: "You're leaving out hats for the house-elves? And you're covering them up with rubbish first?"
Hermione: "Yes."
Ron: "That's not on. You're trying to trick them into picking up the hats. You're setting them free when they might not want to be free."
Hermione: "Of course they want to be free! Don't you dare touch those hats, Ron!"
— Ron and Hermione argue over the hats.[src]

An Elf-Hat is a hat made especially for a House-Elf.

In the 1995–1996 school year Hermione Granger continued the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare-group (S.P.E.W.), that she started the preceding year, and made some Elf-Hats and covered them with rubbish, in the hope that a House-Elf would pick it up, and be freed automatically. Most House-Elves refused to clean Gryffindor Tower, in fear of accidentally picking up clothing, leaving Dobby to clean Gryffindor Tower by himself. Dobby took the hats when cleaning the Gryffindor common room and tried to balance them on his head.[1]

Hermione later wore one of her own elf-hats when she, Harry and Ron went down to Hagrid's cabin following his return to Hogwarts. When Ron clucked his tongue at her for taking the time to don all of this, she excused herself by simply stating that it was cold outside.[2]
