The Philosopher's Stone

The Elixir of Life is a potion produced by using the Philosopher's Stone that grants the drinker an extended life, for as long as they keep drinking it regularly. Its ingredients and the Philosopher's Stone's role in the creation process are unknown, as is the frequency with which it needs to be consumed. A person that relies on the Elixir will die if the potion runs out or becomes contaminated, though in theory they could simply make more.

The Elixir also has the ability to return a wizard or witch whose soul is separated from their body due to a Horcrux's effect to a body. Lord Voldemort planned to steal the Philosopher's Stone to use the power of the elixir for such purpose, but he was thwarted by Harry Potter in 1992. However, he found that being reliant on the Stone and Elixir for eternal life is intolerable, and preferred the usage of Horcruxes.

The Elixir does not make the drinker truly immortal, but only lengthens the lifespan (and possibly stops the person from aging). Nicolas Flamel (who created the Philosopher's Stone) and his wife Perenelle lived for more than six-hundred and sixty years because of this elixir, but eventually died when the Stone was destroyed and their supply of Elixir eventually depleted. The couple had lived a long, fulfilling life, so they did not meet their deaths with sorrow.

Behind the scenes

  • It is not mentioned whether the Elixir grants complete immortality or merely extends life. It is possible that someone who has taken the Elixir may still die of illness or injury.
