Hermione: "This is Felix Felicis, I suppose? You haven't got another little bottle of — I don't know —"
Ron: "Essence of Insanity?"
Harry: "Trust me, I know what I'm doing... or at least Felix does."
Ron and Hermione becoming suspicious after Harry took Felix Felicis and said he was going to see Hagrid[src]

Essence of Insanity was a potion which caused irrational decision making in the drinker.[1][2] Known ingredients were frog brains and beetle eyes.[3]

History[]

"Take your seats. Today we will be brewing Essence of Insanity. I shouldn't have to tell you not to consume this potion... But the baffling behaviour of some of you makes me think you already have. Pay attention. We will begin with a lecture on Essence of Insanity."
— Professor Snape to sixth-year Potions students[src]

Considered "exceedingly dangerous", the brewing of this potion was taught to sixth-years in the 1989–1990 school year at Hogwarts, by Professor Severus Snape in Potions class.[2]

On 21 April 1997, Ron Weasley sarcastically suggested Harry Potter took this potion after Harry consumed Felix Felicis, as he felt his friend was behaving erratically.[1]
