Everett Avery was a wizard and member of the pure-blood Avery family who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he was Sorted into Hufflepuff House, much to his annoyance.[2]
Biography[]
Being born into the old pure-blood Avery family, Everett expected to be sorted into Slytherin when he arrived at Hogwarts, but was sorted into Hufflepuff instead. He appealed to Severus Snape to get a 'house transfer' to Slytherin, but, as this was not something that Hogwarts offered, he instead started searching for a way to prove he belonged in Slytherin, leading him to use Salazar Slytherin's compass to find two keys which unlocked a chest which held a snakewood tree branch, a famed treasure of Slytherin's. However, by using the compass, he accidentally triggered a curse which caused snakes to attack him. He eventually found both keys, but couldn't find the scroll which contained the counter-incantation to break the curse. After stealing a book on the history of Hogwarts's dungeons and blaming it on the house-elf Gimkey, he kept looking in the dungeons, but failed to realise the scroll was in the possession of Horace, the Giant Squid. He was looking in the ballroom when he was confronted by Merula Snyde and Jacob's sibling. Jacob's sibling managed to get the keys from him and they unlocked the scroll case. When Jacob's sibling read the incantation inside, the curse was broken. Jacob's sibling then convinced Everett to embrace his Hufflepuff identity, claiming that family wasn't everything and that his actions had demonstrated that he was a true Hufflepuff despite his family's reputation.[2]
