"Kingdom of Bhutan, it sits high in the Eastern Himalayas. It's a place of indescribable beauty. Some of our most important magic has its origins there. They say if you listen carefully enough, the past whispers to you."
— Albus Dumbledore regarding the Eyrie[src]

The Eyrie was a mountain top overlooking an all-wizarding village[2] in the country of Bhutan. It served as a hideaway for the Magisterial Chamber of Ancient Wizardry, the headquarters of the International Confederation of Wizards, the highest seat of the magical world.[3] Attendees of the Supreme Mugwump election had to apparate from the bridge on the outskirts of the all-wizarding village into the bottom part of the Eyrie. It was said that some of the wizarding world's most ancient magic had its origins there.[1]

The walk of the Qilin was held there in 1932. Dumbledore's first army were transported there via the use of a Portkey, from the Room of Requirement[1] which had the name of the Magisterial Chamber engraved on it.[4]

During the ceremony, Grindelwald had a reanimated dead Qilin falsely bow before him, which declared him to be the new Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards.

Grindelwald declares war on the Muggles

Gellert Grindelwald declared that his war on the non-magic world started that day, and he then tortured the No-Maj Jacob Kowalski with the Cruciatus Curse as punishment for falling in love with Queenie Goldstein, a witch. However, Albus Dumbledore, his army of allies and Credence Barebone exposed him for his electoral fraud and presented the dead Qilin's living twin, which bowed before Santos, declaring her to the true winner of the election. Grindelwald then attempted to murder Credence with the Killing Curse for having betrayed him, only for Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore to intercept his curse, with Albus then duelling him, managing to fight him to a stalemate. Grindelwald then departed once the other wizards present fired their spells at him, with him saying he was not their enemy before fleeing.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • It is interesting to note that Albus Dumbledore didn't just create a Portkey out of anything common, like he presumably did with Theseus Scamander's necktie, to enter the Eyrie. It may be that the Eyrie is enchanted with protective enchantments to prevent entry via a Portkey that is not approved by the Ministry of Magic or other governmental body in charge of the Eyrie, much like how Apparition can be blocked by an Anti-Apparition Charm. This theory is supported by the fact that the Portkey used to enter the Eyrie was highly ornamental and had engravings of Qilins and symbols, whereas normal Portkeys can be anything from an old boot, an old rubber tyre, a blackened kettle, the head of a golden statue, a bent coat hanger, etc.
