This Fanged Puffskein lived in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the 1980s.[1]
Biography[]
During the 1986–1987 school year, Barnaby Lee found this Fanged Puffskein in the Forbidden Forest and began to care for it, feeding it its favourite treat of Peppermint Toads and even sleeping with it at night in the Slytherin common room. However, a few weeks later, Professor Severus Snape found out about this Fanged Puffskein. He confiscated it from Barnaby and released it back into the Forbidden Forest, claiming that Barnaby had no business caring for the creature and that it belonged in the wild.[1]
For the next week, Barnaby deeply missed his Fanged Puffksein, loudly sobbing about it each night. His loud cries kept the other Slytherin students awake, with fellow Slytherin Merula Snyde eventually growing tired of Barnaby's cries and asking Jacob's sibling to help figure out how to make his crying stop. After Jacob's sibling, Merula, and Ismelda Murk attempted to cheer him up by letting him play with Jacob's sibling's Puffskein, arranging a Puffskein throwing session with Rubeus Hagrid's Puffskeins in the Care of Magical Creatures Classroom, and attempting to help Barnaby break his Puffskein stacking record, Barnaby still wasn't cheered up, although he did admit that he was so upset because someone had taken his Puffskein away from him. Barnaby stated that he had to run to class but that he would explain the situation to Jacob's sibling further afterwards.[1]
Barnaby later met with Jacob's sibling in the Great Hall and, after being convinced he could trust them, explained the situation to them, although he unintentionally omitted the name of the professor who had confiscated this Fanged Puffskein. Jacob's sibling learned that Snape had been the one to take this Fanged Puffskein when he overheard their conversation and admonished Barnaby for continuing to be upset about the loss of this Fanged Puffskein, claiming again that it belonged in the wild. After Snape left, Jacob's sibling offered to help Barnaby find this Fanged Puffskein in the Forbidden Forest, planing to meet with him in the Forest Grove and asking Hagrid to help supervise their search.[1]
Jacob's sibling and their Puffskein later met with Barnaby, Merula, and Hagrid in the Forest Grove to search for this Fanged Puffskein. Merula questioned how they would find a creature as small as a Fanged Puffskein in an area as large as the Forbidden Forest, to which Barnaby confidently asserted that they would search until they found his Fanged Puffskein, surprising Merula with his seriousness. To help make their search more efficient, Jacob's sibling asked Hagrid if he had any suggestions for how to search for or lure out this Fanged Puffskein. Hagrid suggested that Puffskeins would eat anything, but, although Barnaby did assert that his Fanged Puffskein enjoyed eating Peppermint Toads, neither Jacob's sibling nor Barnaby had any on them to use as bait. Hagrid and Jacob's sibling reassured Barnaby that they would find this Fanged Puffskein with the aid of Jacob's sibling's Puffskein, although Merula suggested that it would be best to split up to cover more ground, to which everyone agreed.[1]
After a period of searching, Jacob's sibling's Puffskein eventually noticed something hiding in a bush and enticed it to come out, revealing it as Barnaby's Fanged Puffskein. Jacob's sibling alerted the rest of the group to their discovery, with Barnaby happily reuniting with this Fanged Puffskein. However, Hagrid was surprised to learn that Barnaby's lost Puffskein was actually a Fanged Puffskein, with Hagrid revealing that Fanged Puffskeins were illegal to own due to their potential danger. Jacob's sibling surmised that the illegality of Fanged Puffskeins was why Snape had taken this Fanged Puffskein away, while Barnaby asserted that this Fanged Puffskein wasn't dangerous but was simply misunderstood. Barnaby claimed that losing this Fanged Puffskein reminded him of losing his parents, to which Merula asserted that they would keep this Fanged Puffskein despite its illegality, claiming that she couldn't suffer through another night of no sleep and that she admittedly understood where Barnaby was coming from due to the arrest of her own parents.[1]
Jacob's sibling wondered what they would do with this Fanged Puffskein if it was illegal for Barnaby to own it publicly, to which Hagrid claimed that he had an idea he would need to set up. Hagrid later called Jacob's sibling, their Puffskein, Merula, and Barnaby to the Dark Forest in the Magical Creatures Reserve, where Hagrid offered to release this Fanged Puffskein into the Dark Forest, where it could live safely. Jacob's sibling explained to Barnaby that this meant he could visit this Fanged Puffskein whenever he wanted and addressed Merula's questions about the Fanged Puffskein's illegality by claiming that all creatures could be kept in the Magical Creatures Reserve regardless of legality or Ministry of Magic classification.[1]
Barnaby was happy that he could continue to visit this Fanged Puffskein, but was initially unwilling to say goodbye to it in the Dark Forest. Jacob's sibling, their Puffskein, Merula, and Hagrid helped Barnaby to say goodbye to this Fanged Puffskein, also helping him come to terms with the loss of his parents in the process. Barnaby, Jacob's sibling, and their Puffskein offered to visit this Fanged Puffskein frequently, with this Fanged Puffskein and Jacob's sibling's Puffskein expressing their mutual happiness at their newfound friendship.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Following the completion of the "Puffskein Pining" side-quest, this Fanged Puffskein appears in the Dark Forest section of the Magical Creatures Reserve and can be tapped by the player to earn one extra energy.
