Ferrets are small, mustelid, four-legged mammals, domesticated forms of the European Polecat.[1]
History[]
- "Twitchy little ferret, aren't you, Malfoy?"
- — Hermione Granger to Draco Malfoy[src]
Squibbert once transformed a teapot into a ferret, which was then chased by a rather large Slytherin student with a net.[2]
During a Ministry raid on Mortlake's house in August 1992, some extremely odd ferrets were found.[3]
In February 1994, during a visit to Rubeus Hagrid's hut, Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley observed Buckbeak enjoying a large plate of dead ferrets.[4]
During the 1994–1995 school year, Barty Crouch Jnr (disguised as Alastor Moody) transformed student Draco Malfoy into a white ferret and bounced him up and down, as punishment for attempting to attack fellow student Harry Potter from behind, earning Draco the nickname of "The Amazing Bouncing Ferret". Professor McGonagall put a stop to this punishment by reversing the spell and informed "Moody" that transfiguration was never an acceptable form of punishment.[5]
Later that year, during the Yule Ball, Crouch (still disguised as Moody) sat in a chair with a ferret sleeping on his lap, tapping his artificial leg to the music.[6]
During the next school year, student Hannah Abbott accidentally turned a ferret into a flock of flamingos during her Transfiguration Practical O.W.L..[7]
Someone wrote to the Daily Prophets Problem Page to ask if the Ministry would look the other way if he turned his brother's children into blood-sucking ferrets (the answer was 'no').[8]
In 2017, Albus Severus Potter was seen with a ferret in a birdcage when he was about to board the Hogwarts Express.[9]
During the Calamity of the 21st century, Foundables of Hogwarts students were turned into ferrets with curse Confoundables, which could be reversed with the General Counter-Spell to turn the Foundables back to human form, allowing them to be returned by members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.[10] A Foundable of Draco Malfoy in ferret form also became a Foundable at some point.[11]
