- "The island in the North Sea upon which the first fortress was built never appeared on any map, Muggle or wizarding, and is believed to have been created, or enlarged, by magical means."
- — Description[src]
This was an Unplottable island in the North Sea that housed Azkaban, a prison intended to detain the criminals of the wizard population.[1][2] It had never appeared on any Muggle or magical map, and was thus believed to have been magically enlarged to house the fortress.[1]
Lobalugs and Merpeople possibly resided around the island as they were known to be native to the North Sea.[3]
