— Description[src]

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant whose rhizome, ginger root is used in cooking as a highly-flavoured spice and in folk medicine.[8] It was also used in Ginger Newts,[6] and was also used as an ingredient in the brewing of several potions.[2][3][4][5]

Ginger roots were used as part of the Wit-Sharpening Potion,[2][5] and also in the Beautification Potion in powdered form.[3][4]

"Welcome back, class! Today you will learn to grow and care for Ginger Root. Ginger has a wide variety of uses, including for potions and holistic cures. My favourite use, however, is adding it to Butterbeer. Give it a try after class. Let's begin by reviewing Ginger Root's many uses, shall we?"

During fifth-year Herbology class in the 1988–1989 school year on ginger roots, Pomona Sprout particularly emphasised that her favourite usage of the root of the plant, was to be added to Butterbeer, advising students to try it after class, with more comments about asking Rosmerta to add it into the drink when students would be having their next Butterbeer.[1]

Ginger was added to drinks. In the Three Broomsticks Inn, Hermione Granger drank Butterbeer with ginger.[7]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Ginger produces a hot, fragrant kitchen spice. Young ginger rhizomes are juicy and fleshy with a very mild taste. Mature ginger roots are fibrous and nearly dry. Ginger also has several medical uses such as treating stomach issues, the common cold, and aches and pains.[8]
