Rubeus Hagrid owned and wore a moleskin overcoat, which he used to contain a wide variety of different items.[1]
Known contents[]
- "Hagrid's coat seemed to be made of nothing but pockets – bunches of keys, slug pellets, balls of string, mint humbugs, teabags..."
- — The varied contents of his coat pockets[src]
Hagrid wore this coat when he visited an 11-year-old Harry Potter on his birthday (31 July 1991), at the Hut-on-the-Rock, and told him that he was a wizard. When he made himself comfortable, he began to pull out all sorts of strange things. In his pockets, you could find:[1]
- His pink umbrella.[1]
- A slightly squashed box with a large, sticky chocolate cake with "Happy Birthday Harry" written in green icing.[1]
- A copper kettle.[1]
- A squashy packet of sausages.[1]
- A poker.[1]
- A teapot.[1]
- Several chipped mugs.[1]
- A bottle of some amber liquid.[1]
- A real, live rather ruffled-looking owl.[1]
- A long quill.[1]
- A roll of parchment.[1]
- A very dirty, spotted handkerchief the size of a tablecloth.[1]
- A couple of dormice.[1]
- Bunches of keys.[2]
- Slug pellets.[2]
- Balls of string.[2]
- Mint humbugs.[2]
- Teabags.[2]
- Strange-looking coins (Wizarding money: golden Galleons, silver Sickles and bronze Knuts).[2]
- Mouldy dog biscuits.[2]
- A tiny golden key (Harry's vault key).[2]
Description[]
The coat was extremely large and black and was made up of pockets that housed a number of unusual objects and creatures. Hagrid wore it often, as seen in the Hut-on-the-Rock,[1] in Diagon Alley[2] and possibly around the Hogwarts grounds and in his Hut. He once let Harry sleep under it for the night and told him to not mind it if it wriggled, as there might have been dormice running around in one of the pockets.[1] The next morning, an owl swooped in through the window and dropped a copy of the Daily Prophet newspaper on Hagrid and began attacking and savaging the coat, demanding for its payment of five Knuts.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the first book, J. K. Rowling makes it very clear that the overcoat possesses some type of "magic power". However, we never hear of these abilities again, whereas in the films, the coat is portrayed as a normal travelling cloak with no power whatsoever.
- It is possible that the overcoat may be charmed with the Undetectable Extension Charm, as it can hold a great number of items in such small spaces.
- In the Harry Potter film series, Hagrid wears a number of overcoats that differ in look and appearance. This makes it difficult to pinpoint as to which one may hold the charm.
