The final repository was a storage unit made of goblin silver, buried deep within the Keepers' Caverns beneath Hogwarts Castle.

History[]

It was constructed by Bragbor the Boastful at the behest of Professor Isidora Morganach to contain the extracted pain from Hogwarts students. By the time of Isidora's death, it had become a vast store of ancient magic that if ever released, could threaten the wizarding world as a whole. To safeguard it against possibly corrupt influences, the Keepers kept it a secret from the rest of Hogwarts, burying it deep underneath the Map Chamber, where they would permit it to be discovered by an unidentified Hogwarts student centuries later.[1][2] There was another repository beneath Rookwood Castle, but it was significantly smaller than the one in Keepers' Caverns.[4]

The existence of the Repository became known to Ranrok, a goblin rebel and descendant of Bragbor, who worked with the criminal kingpin Victor Rookwood, after learning about its exact location in Bragbor's last journal.[5] However, he had been aware of its existence long before, as he had depleted the Rookwood Castle repository and was hungry for more ancient magic.[4]

Ranrok had amassed an army of Loyalists, and constructed large drills, with the hope of penetrating the rock foundation of Hogwarts and stealing the Repository's power for himself.[5] Concurrently, the student was determined to prove themselves to the Keepers and show that they were worthy enough to defend it.[1]

The Repository was ultimately destroyed in a battle conducted by Ranrok and his Loyalists in the 1890–1891 school year. Ranrok consumed the magic within and transformed into a dragon. He was eventually defeated by the student, who possibly reconstructed the Repository, or possibly ingested its power themselves.[1]
