"Small fish flickered past him like silver darts."
— Fish in the Great Lake[src]

A fish (plural: fish or fishes) is an aquatic gill-bearing vertebrate animal. With more than 34,300 living species, fish exhibit greater species diversity than any other group of vertebrates.[1] Ichthyomancy was a method of divination involving the use of fish.[2][3]

Salmon, one of the possible corporeal forms of the Patronus Charm

Fish existed both in the wizarding world and the Muggle world. Several kinds of fish were one of the possible corporeal form of the Patronus Charm.[4] Piscifors was a transforming spell, which transformed the target into a fish.[5]

Uses in potions[]

Some fish organs, such as spines and eyeballs, were used in potion-making. Puffer-fish eyes, which could be purchased in Diagon Alley for 5 Galleons per jar, were one of the potion ingredients in the Swelling Solution.[6] Powdered Spine of Lionfish could be used in the brewing of certain potions, including the Wiggenweld Potion[7] and the Herbicide Potion.[8]

History[]

In the 19th century, after her parents forbade her to marry a merman, Mirabella Plunkett transfigured herself into a haddock and was never seen again.[9] From the 1970s to 1981, Horace Slughorn had a pet fish named Francis, gifted to him by Lily Evans.[10]
