"Henry’s son was called Fleamont Potter. Fleamont was so called because it was the dying wish of Henry’s mother that he perpetuate her maiden name, which would otherwise die out."
— Fleamont legacy[src]

Fleamont was the surname of a pure-blood or half-blood[1] wizarding family. The mother of Henry Potter, who was born a Fleamont, asked on her deathbed for him to preserve her maiden name so it would not die out. Henry honoured her request by naming his son Fleamont Potter.[2]

Family history

Not much is known about the early history of the Fleamont family. Henry Potter's mother was a witch born into this family, who married into the Potter family. She had one son, Henry, who served on the Wizengamot from 1913 to 1921. Henry caused a minor controversy by publicly condemning then-Minister for Magic Archer Evermonde's decision to forbid the wizarding community from aiding Muggles during the First World War.[3]

On her deathbed, she asked Henry to preserve her maiden name, which would otherwise die out with her, as she was apparently the last of her line. He honoured her request by naming his son Fleamont.[4]

Harry Potter, best known for his famous defeat of the dangerous Dark Wizard Lord Voldemort, was a descendant of this family.

In addition to the Potters, the Fleamonts were distantly related to other magical families such as the Weasleys, Prewetts and Blacks, and Muggle families such as the Evanses.

Fleamont is a name composed of the words flea and mont, from Latin and French roots respectively. Flea comes from the Latin fleon, which means to flee, to escape, while mont is French for mountain. Together they mean to flee mountain.

Fleamont could also be derived from Fleaman, which comes from Fleeman, derived from an old Anglo-French word, fleming. Fleming is a term used as a slang term for people born or living in Flanders, a region in Europe roughly corresponding to the area of Western Europe now known as Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) and neighbouring parts of France and Germany, where the population speaks Dutch.
