Florence Finnigan was a British or Irish witch who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where she was Sorted into Gryffindor House.

Biography

Hogwarts years

In her first year at Hogwarts, Finnigan felt like she didn't belong in Gryffindor House, as she was scared of many things. Peeves, who was angry about not being included as part of the History of Magic curriculum about Hogwarts, goaded and manipulated her into committing various acts of mischief and getting the Hogwarts anniversary feast cancelled, spreading rumours to blame the destruction on the angry spirits of the founders, who were supposedly dissatisfied with the current state of their houses.

Finnigan stole fireworks and a Fanged Frisbee from Filch's office. She released the fireworks in the Gryffindor common room's fireplace, starting a major fire, and released the Fanged Frisbee in the Ravenclaw common room, where it shredded the Hogwarts anniversary feast sheet music that she had stolen from Filius Flitwick. She also attempted to freeze the Slytherin common room with the Freezing Spell, though didn't manage to do so fully, and shrunk all the furniture in the Hufflepuff common room. When she shrunk the furniture, she accidentally left her wand in the room, which Penny Haywood discovered and showed to Jacob's sibling. Using Prior Incantato, they were able to figure out that it was that wand which shrunk the furniture. Moaning Myrtle also overheard her and Peeves discussing their plans in her bathroom and eventually told Jacob's sibling, though she didn't identify who the student was. Jacob's sibling eventually ran into Finnigan after the Gryffindor common room fire. Although they didn't suspect her at the time, she revealed she was the one who had told Argus Filch that the feast should be cancelled, something he was now attempting to make happen.

Eventually, Jacob's sibling discovered that Finnigan was behind all the destruction and explained all they had discovered to Albus Dumbledore in front of the whole school. Finnigan initially denied it, but confessed after she accidentally gave herself away by identifying the wand that had been used to cast the Shrinking Charm as hers.

Behind the scenes

• Florence's relationship with Seamus Finnigan is unknown. It is likely that the surname 'Finnigan' was chosen by the developers for a reason, yet with Seamus's father being a Muggle, their relationship (if any) cannot be assumed. It is said that Seamus's father was shocked when he found out his wife was a witch, but this could be for any number of reasons. In sum, she could be Muggle-born, come from a different branch of the family, or be completely unrelated altogether.
