Flying Instructor was the title given to the teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who taught Flying classes and refereed Quidditch matches.[1][2]
Description[]
They were in charge of teaching their subject to the students of Hogwarts in their first year, on the lawn by the Forbidden Forest.[1] The Instructor also had an office, which was located in a safe place where the school Quidditch crate was stored.[3][4] Rolanda Hooch held the post from at least the mid-1900s,[1] and was still teaching in 1997.[5]
Broomstick skills did not appear to have formed an integral part of any O.W.L. or N.E.W.T. course in any subject.
History[]
1890s[]
Chiyo Kogawa served as Flying Instructor during 1890.[6]
1900s[]
Madam Hooch became the Hogwarts Flying Instructor some time before or during this decade.[1] She became renowned as a well respected teacher and Quidditch referee, known for her fairness and preference for clean play and good sportsmanship.[2]
1960s[]
During the 1966–1967 school year, Madam Hooch refereed the 1967 Hogwarts Quidditch final, which later became famous as the highest-scoring match in Hogwarts history. Future Wigtown Wanderers star player Ethan Parkin led his House to a 580-570 victory. The team had been trailing 420-570 until Parkin led his team in a Power Play to score a goal, and soon after the team Seeker caught the snitch, leading to the victory. The match became legendary for its high scores and exciting final moments. In 1987, Hooch also recalled that it was a particularly rough game, having to call a dozen fouls in the first few minutes alone.[7]
1972[]
Some time this year, there was a brawl on the Quidditch pitch that would become infamous.[8]
1980s[]
During the 1980s, Madam Hooch continued to teach first-year students basic broomstick handling and flight skills.[9][10][11] She also taught more advanced manoeuvres to later years.[12] During his time at Hogwarts, Andre Egwu, a highly skilled flyer, sometimes helped Hooch supervise classes.[13]
During the 1986–1987 school year, Jacob's sibling became interested in the 1967 final and asked Madam Hooch about it. The student was particularly interested in the match's last play as Ethan Parkin had returned to Hogwarts to watch his daughter, Skye, play in the final that year. Parkin had taken over the training of his former house team and had mentioned the match, but was evasive about the exact nature of the final play that had won it.[7]
1991[]
During the 1991–1992 school year, Madam Hooch taught first-year classes early in the year,[1] and personally greeted a Ravenclaw student she was familiar with named Amanda.[14] During the first class, Neville Longbottom was injured after losing control of his broom, and she was forced to take him to Madam Pomfrey in the Hospital Wing. Following Hooch's departure with Longbottom, Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy quarrelled over Draco stealing Neville's dropped Remembrall.[1]
Despite Madam Hootch explicitly warning that anyone caught flying without supervision would face expulsion, when Draco threw the Remembrall high in the air, Harry used his broom to retrieve it, demonstrating great natural skill. One witness to the incident was Minerva McGonagall, Transfiguration Professor and the deputy Headmistress. Fortunately for Potter, due to Professor McGonagall's intervention, he was spared expulsion and offered the position of Seeker on the Gryffindor House team.[1]
It is believed that the students continued flying lessons throughout their first year, but Harry Potter did not have to, as he would practise with the team. Hooch refereed the Quidditch match between Slytherin and Gryffindor, declaring that she wanted a clean game from all students playing.[2]
Later, the refereeing duty was taken over by Severus Snape for the Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor match.[15]
