- "These weighty tomes may erupt dangerously from bookcases in the library - especially in the Restricted Section. They can be stunned with Flipendo; however, they're easily combustible."

A flying book[1] was any book that had been bewitched to fly, as well as to attack and bite anyone nearby. Some of them might throw projectiles. The books were found in the Hogwarts Library, particularly the Restricted Section. There were multiple ways to defend against a flying book. They could be stunned using a Knockback Jinx, burned with a Fire-Making Spell or transfigured into a mouse using the Snufflifors Spell.[1][2][3]
The Hogwarts Library had a number of copies by September 1991.[1] More books were imported from the Hogwarts Express on 1 September 1993 in large wooden crates that were held in a freight compartment of the train. They were then moved into the Glanmore Peakes' Corridor.[3]
