A footman was a medieval equivalent of an infantryman; a soldier who is trained to engage, fight, and defeat the enemy in face-to-face combat.

There were many footman suits of armour at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry under possession by ghouls, ghosts, or spectres. They could be aggressive to passers-by, but were particularly vulnerable to the Glacius spell. However, they were resistant to Vermillious.
