Forums: Index > The Wizengamot > Discussions link from article

There has been some requests for creating a dedicated link from an article to a Discussion post as a way of encouraging user conversations about the article's topic, but not using the Talk page as it's not about editing the article. I have prototyped one approach Albus Dumbledore - look for the Discussions icon near the top. There is obviously some spacing issues (mostly caused by the top video (grumble, grumble)) and this icon link doesn't appear in the mobile web (where it would make the most sense), and appears unsupported in the app (possibly some tricks to help here) but for now I just wanted to make an example of how this might work and see what others thought. Feedback appreciated! --Ironyak1 (talk) 20:39, March 2, 2019 (UTC)

My 1st and very inconsequential opinion, is that, could transparent background be considered? lmao. That literally was the first thought when I saw it on Dumbledore's article when it was positioned differently in one of the template revisions; I thought the white square part seemed out of placed. (I did state it is very trivial lol)
Idea-wise, I think it is very reasonable, though, not to sound off-topic, but due to the nature of it and its placement, I'd like to call back the discussion on the similarity between this new link and the existing {{Protected-small}}, {{FA}}, and {{TT}}. A different example from what was previously used, can be seen at w:c:avatar:Korra with the use of w:c:avatar:Template:Icons; note that the current placement is a newer development and may not even meet Fandom's customization policy, however, as the placement is proven to be adjustable, I think making it to stay within the article body and appear where {{Discussions}} is setup to appear, should be doable. I know, this sound like it's off-topic but it really isn't; Dumbledore's article hold both {{FA}} and {{TT}} and now this new template; with {{FA}} and {{TT}} overlapping in a weird way (I doesn't think it used to alway do that?), I just think finding the solution for the display of the 3 similar templates could be beneficial, because I think what would later have this new template, is likely to also have one of the other templates mentioned being present as well. That's my thought on the matter.

Yeah, this is a quick cludged together test just to check the interest before going down the path of a full implementation. A transparent background for the icon of course makes sense. I purposely choose Dumbledore's article as it has many icons to consider the interactions. FWIW, you can add a right and top offset now to eliminate the icons overlapping which could also be added to the FA & TT, as it sometimes makes more sense to stack them vertically or horizontally depending on the tophats present.
w:c:avatar:Template:Icons is obviously a much better solution for multiple icons and addresses the semi-protected notice issue to boot. It however also does not appear in the mobile version or the integrated app so a lot of this is extra work to customize the web interface which is the least used... I'll keep looking to see if there is a better cross-platform solution (be nice if FANDOM mobile skins just handled some of this without everyone having to be web designers and testers...) Thanks for the input! --Ironyak1 (talk) 22:40, March 2, 2019 (UTC)
