Forums: Index > The Wizengamot > Foreign languages & article names

Just wanted to raise this for discussion while we are working through the new info from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. As the series expands around the world, much of the new info will not be given in English. Are we going to use the original language for article names or the English translations? For example, currently we have French Ministry of Magic, and not Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France; but meanwhile we also have Cimetière du Père-Lachaise and not Père Lachaise Cemetery. I just wanted to get ahead of this and try to figure out where the translation line should be drawn and likely add it to the policies. Those with knowledge of French, German, Portuguese, and other applicable languages, hopefully have some insight on this. Merci! (and no, my high-school French does not count ;) --Ironyak1 (talk) 23:50, November 15, 2018 (UTC)

The French Ministry of Magic could be moved to the proper title with a redirect left behind to adhere to canon. That way those who lack any skill with other languages can still benefit from the wiki and perhaps learn a little through the titles. It would keep both page names while adhering to canon titles. I think articles should be named in-universe style, so the French Ministry of Magic article should be called "Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France". I feel like it makes more sense as one of the policies on the wiki is to write articles in-universe. If anyone needs help with translations, I can especially help with French, and I have slight knowledge of the German Language. I'm a native German speaker, and I'll be happy to help too. With the ministries, I think they may be kept at the English title. The French Ministry of Magic It is refered to such on Pottermore.--Rodolphus (talk) 09:37, November 16, 2018 (UTC)

I also agree that articles should be named in-universe style. It respects more the canon. We should obviously create and add redirections for no speakers of these languages. Lady Junky 02:46, November 19, 2018 (UTC)
