I have noticed that some of the less main pages have administrator protection, like Hannah Abbott and Seamus Finnigan, but the main one's (even Harry Potter!) What do you think about this?--L.V.K.T.V.J.'Hogwarts(Send an owl!) 03:12, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

Well, Harry Potter is semi-protected, but I think you are right. Most of the really important pages should be at least at that level. I know that some pages for lesser characters are fully protected. We should definitely set some protection, b/c the major articles are ripe for vandalism. I see it all the time. --Hcoknhoj 03:16, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

Well, I noticed Harry Potter isn't actually semi-protected. Unregistered contributors can get on it. It's not adminstrator protected.--L.V.K.T.V.J.'Hogwarts(Send an owl!) 03:20, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

Well, let's bring in Seth Cooper and get his opinion, he's an admin. You are right, now that I think about it. It is semi-protected in name only. --Hcoknhoj 03:22, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
Grunny took the semi-protected tag off Harry Potter since, it is not actually semi-protected. --Hcoknhoj 04:33, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
Protecting the pages permanently would stop some vandalism, however, it would also stop potentially good edits from unregistered and newly registered users, which could also deter them from editing. See Help:Common mistakes#Protecting pages unnecessarily. While in the past on other wikis I have permanently protected high-traffic articles, I think it should be reserved for when there's a history of an excessive amount of vandalism. Looking at Harry Potter, however, there is quite a few reverts in the last 50 edits all occurring in a relatively short space of time, which I would consider excessive, though that's open to interpretation. If there is a consistently high amount of vandalism occurring on a page, then permanent semi-protection should be considered. The Harry Potter article was semi-protected for a few months due to a bad run of vandalism, but the protection expired. Grunny (Talk) 04:46, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
