Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald made a magical blood pact sometime in the summer of 1899, in order to prevent one another physically harming the other. The pendant remained in Grindelwald's possession for many years. However, during the Battle in the Lestrange Mausoleum at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France in September 1927, the pendant was stolen without Grindelwald's knowledge by a Niffler belonging to Newton Scamander. Scamander subsequently brought the pendant to Dumbledore at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry shortly thereafter, who was uncertain of whether it could be destroyed or not, but resolved to try.
