This skull-hookah belonged to Gellert Grindelwald, and was made of an aged human skull. When used, it allowed others to experience Grindelwald's visions.[1]
Inscription[]
The inscription on the front of the skull included:
- Gellert Grindelwald's army symbol.
- The German inscription "Für das Größere Wohl", meaning in English "For the Greater Good".
- The year 1898.
This likely meant, that something happened to him in 1898, that scarcely traumatised him that led him to develop a hate for the Non-magic people and their blood and find Wizarding supremacy superior.
History[]
1927[]
While hiding out in his headquarters with his Alliance, Gellert Grindelwald puffed smoke and created a vision to show his army what Credence Barebone was and why he was so important to his cause.[2]
Gellert Grindelwald used it to foresee the Second World War and present the images in his mind to his followers and other wizards during his rally in Paris in 1927. His lieutenant, Vinda Rosier, held the hookah for him so he could conjure dark fire in order to separate his followers from his enemies in the Lestrange Mausoleum. However, it was destroyed when Leta Lestrange cast a powerful spell at it to explode it, knocking over Rosier in the process.
Behind the scenes[]
- The prop director Pierre Bohanna described the use of it as “I inhale and exhale a spirit”.[3]
- This skull resembles a 'Beinhaus skull', a type of intricately painted skull kept in Hallstatt Beinhaus (Charnel House), in the town of Hallstatt, Austria.[4]
- The origins of this skull are unknown. However, if 1898 was the year in which Grindelwald was expelled from the Durmstrang Institute at age sixteen (Grindewald was born sometime between 1882 and 1883), it may have had some significance to his time at the school.
