Gerard Grey[6] was a pure-blood wizard and the father of Abigail Grey. Like his daughter, he was a werewolf.[2]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Gerard was born into a pure-blood family in the 20th century. At the age of five, he was somehow infected with lycanthropy.[7]. He did not attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as was customary for werewolves, but secretly thought he would surely be sorted into Gryffindor.[8][9]

Disappearance[]

By the time of the Battle of Hogwarts, he had already met Diana Grey and had a daughter, Abigail, with her. He faked his own death to break away from Fenrir Greyback's pack and to protect his wife and daughter. He changed his first name and last name at this time.[4] At some point, he also had more children with Diana.[3]

Abigail noticed that Gerard disappeared once a month when she was young. Curious, she followed him into the forest one night and discovered he was a werewolf. Gerard couldn't afford to brew the Wolfsbane Potion, nor did he have the skills needed. He picked up her scent immediately after turning and attacked her. Diana luckily managed to find her and intervene just in time to help her escape with her life, but Abigail was bitten in the process. After learning he had also infected her and fearing that he could also infect his wife, he was devastated and left to avoid attacking her or anyone else in the future.[2]

Abigail lost touch with her father. When she was attending Hogwarts, she decided to try to find him. She wrote him a letter but did not receive a response. She enlisted the help of her friend to investigate and track down her father.[2] Gerard tried to find a new home, and at some point established a pack of werewolves and lived in a new location. When they were forced to leave their new home, they decided to try living in Hogsmeade.[5]

However, when Renka Rabblehauser started causing trouble with her anti-werewolf activities, life started to get very difficult. This was worsened by Abigail who kept arguing with her. When Aberforth Dumbledore offered the pack a safe, hiding place in the cellar of the Hog's Head Inn, they accepted and moved in.[5]

Unknown to Abigail, he was near Hogwarts. One evening, she saw him collecting aconite in the Forbidden Forest, but his face was hidden by his hood. When he realised she was there, he ran away before she could catch him. While he was trying to escape, he ran into centaurs who tried to stop him. He attacked them in order to get away.[2]

Reunion with Abigail[]

Gerard heard that Abigail was getting close to discovering the truth. His pack brought her to him in the Hog's Head where they were finally reunited. She introduced him to her friend who he was wary of at first, to which they responded they were only trying to do what was right. He thought that was an interesting concept those days and asked them for their opinion of werewolves. He was pleased with their answer that werewolves were only people, and happy that his daughter had an understanding friend.[5]

Abigail asked why he was there and he explained that Renka had made it dangerous. He told Abigail he had to stop engaging with her because it was making things worst. Abigail stated she was only trying to protect them but he warned her that she was falling into Renka's trap. After realising the people with Gerard were also werewolves, he introduced them to his new pack. They were hoping Hogameade could be their new home but so far it was too unfriendly with Renka.[5]

Abigail asked if they were behind the break-ins, though she didn't think they were. Gerard told her they weren't and that it was Renka's doing. However, he then explained that Renka might be proven right about how dangerous they were soon because they were struggling to find ingredients for the Wolfsbane Potion before the next full moon. Abigail and her friend offered to help make it and he agreed becajse he knew they wouldn't stop getting involved anyway.[5]

The night of the full moon, he received a big batch of Wolfsbane Potion for his pack. He then told Abigail's friend to leave because transforming into a werewolf wasn't pretty. However, Abigail later realised she had given her father a faulty batch of the potion, meaning Gerard and his pack would be true, dangerous wolves that night. After transforming herself, she and her friend were approached by Gerard's pack.[5]

The transformed Gerard eventually found his daughter and the student. Abigail tried to calm him down but it didn't work, and they worked together to restrain him. The next morning, Gerard was worried that they might have hurt someone, but the student assured him that everyone was safe. He thanked the student for everything they did for him, his daughter and his pack. Moments later, Renka showed up and accused the pack of having injured innocent people, but the student and Abigail revealed that everyone was safe and that the break-ins and the sabotaged Wolfsbane Potion was Renka's doing. Renka was arrested and the people of Hogsmeade agreed that the pack was innocent, yet they were still afraid of the werewolves and the pack decided to leave. Gerard, after watching how his daughter accomplished managing the curse, asked himself "how could he not come back?", and decided to stay.[10]

After years on the run, Gerard finally returned home and reunited with Diana and his other children, all of whom, despite his fear that they would resent him for leaving, accepted him back with open arms just like Abigail had. He also regularly met with Abigail to catch up on what he had missed while he was away and to help him learn how to get used to living among wizards again. He gradually became used to a regular wizard lifestyle, although he still questioned why one would use kitchen utensils to eat food when they had "perfectly good hands and teeth." He also acknowledged that, although he still got dirty looks from time to time when he went out, wizards seemed to have become more accepting of werewolves than they were when he had first been bitten. Despite this, he still hadn't fully forgiven himself for attacking Abigail in the past, although he acknowledged the chance he had been given to move forward.[3][11]

Gerard later sent a letter to the Muggle-born student informing them of his progress with both his family and his reintegration into society. He also thanked the student for everything they did to help him, his pack, and Abigail, asserting that he would always be thankful to them for being there for her when he couldn't be.[3]
