Glenna Golding (née Merriweather) was a half-blood witch who lived in Hogsmeade in the 21st century. She was the descendant of Morven Merriweather, the wife of Shane Golding prior to his death, the mother of Nyle Golding, and the owner of a mischievous Kneazle called Marlowe.[2]
Biography[]
Glenna was the daughter of Tiburon Merriweather, a wizard who lived in Hogsmeade, and a Muggle woman. At age eleven, she began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, during the 1970s.[2] She nearly failed Transfiguration in her first year as her toad steadfastly refused to turn into a teacup.[6]
At some point in her life, she developed a liking for old Muggle detective novels, The Long Goodbye being one of her favourites, eventually naming her pet Kneazle after the protagonist Philip Marlowe. Glenna liked these novels very much and was pleased that there wasn't magic in them, believing that if the heroes had wands those stories would become boring, and that there would be no investigations at all if Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot had Legilimency.[2]
After leaving Hogwarts, Glenna got a job at the British Ministry of Magic. For a little over three years, she worked for the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, and was a member of the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee. Glenna created cover stories for the Muggle news, and she once used a trimming accident to cover a bad bit of splinching. She wanted to plant a story about a serial killer on the loose, but her boss shut it down; and she also did a story of a tornado that touched down near the Tower of London.[2] Glenna enjoyed making up excuses for magic, but felt that the Ministry didn't appreciate some of her more creative efforts and anything involving a herd of African elephants was usually nixed straight away.[6]
Glenna got lost at the Ministry once and stumbled her way into the Department of Mysteries, for which they were not pleased and she thought they were a rather nervous bunch. Glenna used to visit London's bookshops for the many wonderful Muggle mysteries and it was something she missed after she stopped working at the Ministry. During her time at the Ministry, she met Shane Golding, who was brought into the Ministry under suspicion of performing magic at Piccadilly Circus. After a sternly worded rebuke and a lovely first date at the Leaky Cauldron, they got together and eventually married. Glenna left the Ministry of Magic after getting tired of working in a glorified basement.[6]
Glenna and Shane relocated in Hogsmeade permanently as it was always a favourite for her. They had a son, Nyle Golding, who was born a Squib. Glenna and Shane were in Hogsmeade during the Battle of Hogwarts and did what they could, but it was hard for them to help with a horde of Dementors between them and the castle. After Shane's death, she began avoiding going to Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop because all the happy couples reminded her of Shane and how much she missed him.[6]
In 2011, she was scared off by Marlowe, her pet Kneazle, causing him to be denied treacle tarts by a Hogsmeade witch as a punishment.[4]
One day during the Christmas season of 2011, Marlowe ran away from Glenna on the streets of Hogsmeade, and stopped next to a Hogwarts student. Glenna chased after him, and apologised to the student. She recognised them by name and introduced herself as their great-aunt on their mother's side through their grandmother. The student was in shock as no one had ever mentioned to them that they had a magical aunt. Glenna explained to the student and their friends that she only discovered the truth after seeing a photo of them in the Daily Prophet and how they looked remarkably like her father Tiburon in his school days, and that she asked some friends in the Ministry to look up some records to find out about their relation.[2]
Glenna invited the student and their friends to the Three Broomsticks Inn for Butterbeers and to answer the student's questions. She then invited them to her home, but Daniel and Abigail couldn't go. When Glenna and the student arrived at the house, they were received by Morven Merriweather, who told Glenna he didn't see the resemblance with Tiburon.[2]
Inside the home, Glenna and the student talked about the house, Marlowe and Glenna's job at the Ministry. While they were talking, Nyle came downstairs looking for his string box to untangle his marionettes. Glenna introduced the student to Nyle as his cousin and told the student that Nyle was very talented with the puppets and that he was going to put on a show in Hogsmeade. Nyle was trying to untangle the puppets' strings and Glenna offered to help, but Nyle refused, and Glenna replied that it wasn't a big deal and once everyone saw his talent nobody would care that he was a Squib. This caused Nyle to get upset and leave the house. Glenna apologised to the student because that introduction to the family did not go how she had hoped. The student understood and promised to visit again before the holiday.[2]
After the student had left, Glenna promised Marlowe that she'd "tell them" when they were ready to hear it.[2]

Personality and traits[]
Glenna was a protective and caring mother to her son, Nyle, always complimenting his puppetry talent. However, she often added unsolicited advice into her conversations with him, which frequently led him to feel bad about his family. She would sometimes be upset with her Kneazle, Marlowe, when he caused trouble for the shopkeepers in Hogsmeade. Glenna had been feeling down and blue for a long time after her husband's death shortly before Christmas but was slowly healing after meeting a student she claimed to be her nibling.[7]
Etymology[]
Glenna is a feminine given name of Irish and Gaelic origin, meaning of valley, or from glen.[8]
