Glow Bugs were small luminescent magical worms.[1]
Description[]
Glow Bugs possessed a light organ referred to as a "blinker," which they could use to produce repeated bright light flashes. While these flashes were usually random, specific patterns of flashes could be used to communicate information between individuals. Glow Bugs were intelligent enough to use these flashes to communicate information to humans as well, ceasing their flashing if a human managed to figure out the message they were attempting to convey. However, this glow could also attract predators to the creature, as certain fish species were extremely susceptible to the glow of a Glow Bug. For this reason, Glow Bugs were sometimes used as bait for these fish species by wizarding fishers. Glow Bugs were able to crawl, fly, and even skim across the surface of lakes if needed.[3]
History[]
Many of these were kept in lightbulbs by Newt Scamander in 1926. Some were kept in his suitcase and used for lighting.[1]
Sir Ribbithe once got lost and fed on Glow Bugs during the 1988–1989 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, making himself glow like a Moon Frog.[2]
