This Glow Bug lived in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the 1980s.[1]

Biography[]

In the 1980s, Jacob's sibling would often bond with and feed this Glow Bug.[1]

During the 1986–1987 school year, a swarm of Glow Bugs that had befriended this Glow Bug were captured by Argus Filch, who planned to use them as fish bait after realising that certain fish were noticeably susceptible to a Glow Bug's glow. Fearing for its friends' lives, this Glow Bug appeared on the doorstep of Rubeus Hagrid's hut one morning and started repeatedly blinking its light in the wind, being noticed by Hagrid. Hagrid observed that this Glow Bug would occasionally get up and fly around in circles before settling back down and continuing to blink repeatedly. Unable to figure out what was wrong with this Glow Bug, Hagrid contacted Jacob's sibling and explained the situation to them, hoping that their bond with this Glow Bug would enable them to discover what was troubling it.[1]

After Jacob's sibling agreed to help, Hagrid suggested that they should check to make sure that nothing was physically wrong with this Glow Bug, although he noted that doing so would be difficult due to the creature's small size. In response, Jacob's sibling suggested that they could use the Engorgement Charm on the creature to temporarily increase its size for the examination, to which Hagrid agreed. Once the Engorgement Charm was cast, the pair began to examine the creature, finding that nothing seemed to be physically wrong with it that could explain its agitated state. Hagrid suggested that it could simply be showing off or that it had never learned how to properly use its light, but remained unsure.[1]

Hagrid suggested that Jacob's sibling could keep an eye on this Glow Bug for a while while he checked on some things at the Magical Creatures Reserve and that they should show the creature to Ismelda Murk to see if she noticed anything they missed, much to Jacob's sibling's surprise. However, Hagrid asserted that he had seen Ismelda spend hours staring at Glow Bugs in the Forbidden Forest some nights, claiming that her spending all that time with them might have led her to discover information about the creatures the two of them might not know.[1]

After using the Shrinking Charm to return this Glow Bug to its natural size, Jacob's sibling and this Glow Bug met up with Ismelda in the Clock Tower Courtyard, while a nearby Ben Copper ordered Jacob's sibling to keep this Glow Bug away from him. Ismelda attempted to dodge conversation with Jacob's sibling, but they managed to explain the situation to her and ask her for her help in understanding what was agitating this Glow Bug. Ismelda claimed that she knew how to help Jacob's sibling but was unwilling to get wrapped up in one of their adventures, forcing Jacob's sibling to convince her to help them. After much convincing, Ismelda finally agreed to tell Jacob's sibling what she knew about Glow Bugs if they would leave her alone afterwards, to which Jacob's sibling agreed.[1]

Ismelda suggested that this Glow Bug was flashing to try to get Jacob's sibling's attention, claiming that Glow Bugs did not always blink randomly but that they used their blinks to communicate with one another. She suggested that Jacob's sibling should observe this Glow Bug carefully to see what it was trying to communicate to them, although Jacob's sibling feared that they could be missing something serious by waiting and observing it if the message was urgent. Ismelda suggested that Jacob's sibling find friends willing to watch this Glow Bug with them in order to notice something faster, with Jacob's sibling suggesting that they could contact Penny Haywood and Andre Egwu for help.[1]

After meeting up with Penny and Andre in the Great Hall, Jacob's sibling found that Penny had invited Barnaby Lee to help out as well. Jacob's sibling explained the Glow Bug's situation to the three of them and asked for their help in interpreting its blinks. The four of them observed this Glow Bug together before discussing what they thought the message might be. Penny suggested that this Glow Bug was blinking because it wanted to spend more time with friends, while Andre suggested that it might actually want an updated look. Meanwhile, Barnaby suggested that this Glow Bug was simply blinking because it was hungry, as it was currently on a table where food was normally served.[1]

At that moment, this Glow Bug suddenly started flying back and forth, with Andre suggesting that the creature wanted to show Jacob's sibling something. Penny guessed that it wanted them to see something between where they were sitting and the exit, but Jacob's sibling suggested that it wanted them to follow it instead. Upon hearing this suggestion, this Glow Bug immediately stopped flying, confirming that Jacob's sibling had interpreted the message correctly. This Glow Bug then quickly flew out of the Great Hall, with Jacob's sibling following close behind.[1]

Jacob's sibling followed this Glow Bug to the Forbidden Forest, finding a set of fishing gear seemingly abandoned in the forest. Jacob's sibling searched the area for the owner of the gear, hoping that they could shed some light on the situation. Upon following a set of human footprints and the smell of a cat, Jacob's sibling encountered Filch and Mrs Norris hiding in the forest, with Filch claiming that they were hiding to avoid Jacob's sibling. Jacob's sibling noticed that Filch was not wearing his usual outfit, as he seemed to be wearing fishing gear. Filch claimed that he had promised Albus Dumbledore that he wouldn't work on his day off, to the surprise of Jacob's sibling, who was unaware that Filch had days off.[1]

Filch ordered Jacob's sibling to leave them be unless they had come to bring him another Glow Bug. Jacob's sibling told Filch that he couldn't have this Glow Bug, but questioned if Filch had Glow Bugs with him, to which Filch affirmed, claiming that he intended to use their glow as bait to attract certain fish in the Black Lake which he had found to be quite susceptible to their glow. Jacob's sibling realised that this Glow Bug was trying to tell them that Filch was going to hurt its friends, with Filch misunderstanding that this Glow Bug was friends with the fish. Jacob's sibling told Filch that he couldn't use the Glow Bugs as bait, to which Filch retorted that he could, as he had caught them himself. Jacob's sibling suggested that they could find a replacement bait that would work even better, to which Filch doubted but agreed, though he threatened to use his shackles on Jacob's sibling despite what he told Dumbledore if they returned empty-handed or if this was a trick and that he would use the Glow Bugs anyway if they took too long.[1]

In search of better bait for Filch, Jacob's sibling met up with Hagrid and Fang in Hagrid's Garden. After explaining the situation to Hagrid, Jacob's sibling suggested that something from Hagrid's garden might work as better fish bait. They realised that Filch had only stated that fish were attracted to a Glow Bug's glow, not to its taste, suggesting that they should find a plant that glowed brighter and with more consistency than a Glow Bug to use as bait. Hagrid explained that he had pumpkin sprouts, Valerian sprigs, Puffapods, and a few different vegetables in his garden, leading to Jacob's sibling realising that they could use Puffapod beans as bait, as they shone brighter and more consistently than a Glow Bug did.[1]

After gathering up enough Puffapod beans in Hagrid's garden, Jacob's sibling raced to the Black Lake to meet up with Filch and Mrs Norris, who had just been about to give up on Jacob's sibling and bait his hooks with the Glow Bugs anyway. Filch believed that their late arrival meant that they had been unable to find a replacement bait, but Jacob's sibling indicated that he and Hagrid had found that Puffapod beans glowed brighter and more consistently than a Glow Bug and could serve as useful replacement bait. Although Filch agreed to test out the Puffapod beans, he was unwilling to trade them for the Glow Bugs right away, asking Jacob's sibling to show him how to bait his hooks with the beans, as he had never fished with them before.[1]

After helping Filch bait his hooks with the beans, Filch noticed that fish were already gathering at the surface of the water, being attracted by the glow of the beans. With the beans clearly working as a replacement bait, Filch agreed to trade this Glow Bug's friends to Jacob's sibling for the Puffapod beans before ordering Jacob's sibling to leave him alone. After gathering up the Glow Bugs, Jacob's sibling and this Glow Bug returned them to Hagrid's garden, where they met up with Hagrid and Fang. After explaining to Hagrid what had happened, Hagrid was thrilled that Jacob's sibling had managed to rescue the Glow Bugs, while also hoping that Filch's fishing trip would go well.[1]

Jacob's sibling claimed that they should take the Glow Bugs to the reserve to let them out, but Hagrid suggested that they should instead let them out over his garden, as it was a nice night to watch them glow as they reunited. Hagrid and Jacob's sibling happily watched this Glow Bug safely reunite with its friends in the night sky before it briefly returned to Jacob's sibling's side and flashed its light at them. Jacob's sibling asked Hagrid what he thought this Glow Bug was saying, to which Hagrid suggested that it was thanking them, to which Jacob's sibling agreed.[1]
