This Graphorn lived in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the 1980s.[1]

Biography[]

In the 1980s or early 1990s, Jacob's sibling would often bond with and feed this Graphorn.[1]

During the 1987–1988 school year, Rubeus Hagrid encountered this Graphorn in the mountains near the Forbidden Forest, finding her fighting with a mountain troll while trying to enter the troll's cave. Successfully managing to separate the two, Hagrid rescued the Graphorn and brought her safely back to the Magical Creatures Reserve. However, the Graphorn refused to stay within the boundaries of the reserve, regularly rampaging around the grounds and getting Hagrid into trouble. Hagrid managed to contain the creature to his garden, although the Graphorn continued to destroy many of the carrots and pumpkins that Hagrid had planted. After many failed attempts at trying to make the Graphorn listen to him, Hagrid called Jacob's sibling to his garden to ask them for help, as they had bonded with this particular Graphorn while she was at the reserve, although he initially covered up the real reason as to why he had summoned them, claiming that he was just playing with the Graphorn in the garden. Jacob's sibling was able to convince Hagrid to tell them the truth, although Hagrid first explained several key physical features of the Graphorn to them. Upon telling Jacob's sibling about the Graphorn's situation, Hagrid asked them to bond with the Graphorn in order to determine why she wouldn't stay within the reserve, to which they agreed.[1]

After Hagrid returned the Graphorn to the Desert Dunes area of the Magical Creatures Reserve, Jacob's sibling decided to call Barnaby Lee to help them bond with the Graphorn due to his love of magical creatures. Upon reaching the Desert Dunes, Barnaby surprised Jacob's sibling by revealing that he found the Graphorn to be cute. Barnaby attempted to hug the Graphorn in an attempt to calm her down, but the creature rebuffed him, unwilling to let someone she didn't know get so close to it. Jacob's sibling and Barnaby continued trying to approach the Graphorn in an attempt to bond with it, with the Graphorn eventually reaching its facial tentacles towards them, indicating that she appeared to like them. Barnaby stated that he was sure that they would figure out what was troubling the Graphorn, claiming that he felt that he and the Graphorn were alike, as he too acted tough prior to becoming friends with Jacob's sibling but was revealed to be friendly afterwards. However, at that moment, the Graphorn disappeared from the reserve again, with Barnaby admitting that he had seen her walk away but was too absorbed in conversation with Jacob's sibling to tell them about it. Desperately needing to find the Graphorn before she got herself into further trouble, Barnaby revealed that he had seen her heading towards Hogwarts, so the pair hurried there to see if they could find her.[1]

Jacob's sibling and Barnaby eventually found the Graphorn in the Care of Magical Creatures classroom being watched by Professor Silvanus Kettleburn. Kettleburn informed the pair that the Graphorn had made a mess of his classroom prior to his lesson on Murtlaps and, after being informed of the Graphorn's situation, scolded the pair for their negligence allowing the Graphorn to continue to destroy school property. However, he stated that he could help them figure out why the Graphorn kept escaping from the reserve in exchange for them helping clean up his classroom before his students arrived, to which they agreed. After finishing cleaning up, Kettleburn revealed that he had investigated why this Graphorn was on its own despite the species normally forming family herds. Kettleburn informed the pair that this Graphorn was actually a mother who had given birth very recently, with Jacob's sibling and Barnaby theorising that she had become separated from her baby, that she had been escaping from the reserve in an attempt to find it, and that she had been destroying school property out of frustration and stress as a result of not finding her baby. Upon realising that there was now a defenceless baby Graphorn left alone in the wild, Jacob's sibling and Barnaby, along with the Graphorn, rushed back to Hagrid's garden to inform him of the new situation.[1]

Upon informing Hagrid, Jacob's sibling requested that Hagrid tell them how he had found this Graphorn, hoping to gather some clues that might point to the location of her baby. Although Hagrid was able to recount the situation in which he found the Graphorn, he could not remember exactly where he was when he found her. After Hagrid mentioned that the Graphorn had been trying to enter the mountain troll's cave when he found her, Jacob's sibling realised that the missing baby Graphorn might have been inside the cave, which would explain why the mother Graphorn was attempting to enter it with no thought to her own safety. Jacob's sibling further theorised that the mountain troll had taken the baby Graphorn into its cave in an attempt to tame it in order to ride it, suggesting that baby Graphorns might be easier for a troll to train than an adult would be. Jacob's sibling therefore asked Hagrid to lead them and Barnaby to the approximate spot where he found this Graphorn in the hopes that her baby would still be within the area, to which Hagrid agreed.[1]

Upon entering the Forest of the Magical Creatures Reserve, Hagrid remarked that they were close to where he had found the Graphorn. The trio noticed an abundance of creature footprints in the region and examined them closely in order to determine if any of them belonged to either the baby Graphorn or the troll. After their examination, the trio were able to find footprints belonging to both creatures, with those belonging to the baby Graphorn being fresh and seeming to head towards a nearby grove. At that moment, the mother Graphorn rushed ahead, having understood that her baby was nearby, with Jacob's sibling, Barnaby, and Hagrid quickly following behind her. The trio found her in the Forest Grove of the Forbidden Forest, once again in conflict with the same mountain troll. Knowing that she had still not yet fully recovered from her last fight with the troll, Jacob's sibling successfully managed to distract the troll by casting the Banishing Charm at it, leading the troll to start fighting with them instead.[1]

After Jacob's sibling successfully managed to defeat the mountain troll, the beast limped away, with the mother Graphorn briefly charging after it in pursuit. However, having never gotten the chance to properly rest, the Graphorn soon collapsed out of exhaustion from her fights with the troll, barely being able to stand. Knowing that the Graphorn couldn't go after her baby in her current condition and unwilling to do so without her, the trio decided to wait for the Graphorn to recover her strength before moving forward, deciding to plan out how they would rescue the baby in the meantime. After deciding how they would continue to follow the troll's path back to its cave, the Graphorn seemed to have finished resting, finally understanding that the trio was there to help her find her baby. The trio and the Graphorn then set out to follow the troll's tracks in order to find out where it and the baby might have gone.[1]

After following the troll's tracks to the Forest Lake, the trio and the Graphorn found that the tracks stopped but that both the troll and the baby Graphorn were nowhere in sight. Knowing that the two must still be nearby, Jacob's sibling suggested attempting to lure them out into the open, with Barnaby suggesting to use his impression of a Graphorn call to attract the baby. Eventually, after both this Graphorn and Jacob's sibling joined Barnaby in making Graphorn calls, Hagrid heard the sound of the baby Graphorn approaching, with the trio soon noticing the missing baby. However, it was blocked from reaching its mother by the mountain troll. The trio decided to try to distract the mountain troll from the baby, with Barnaby, Hagrid, and the Graphorn making loud noises while Jacob's sibling once again casted the Banishing Charm at it. Eventually, the trio were able to chase away the mountain troll, finally enabling the baby Graphorn to be reunited with its mother. Ecstatic at the reunion, the mother Graphorn embraced Jacob's sibling with its face tentacles to thank them for their help in rescuing her baby, with Hagrid commending them as well for successfully managing to reunite the Graphorn family.[1]
