- "A grey owl was soaring down toward Hermione. 'It hasn't got a newspaper, though,' she said, looking disappointed. 'It's -' But to her bewilderment, the grey owl landed in front of her plate, closely followed by four barn owls, a brown owl, and a tawny."

A grey owl is a type of owl.
History[]
It was not known to be one of the types of owls sold at Eeylops Owl Emporium and no Hogwarts students are known to own one.
On a morning in February 1995, a grey owl was amongst the owls that arrived in the Great Hall bearing hate mail for Hermione Granger from those who had read Rita Skeeter's article "Harry Potter's Secret Heartache" in Witch Weekly, along with four barn owls, a brown owl and a tawny. She chose to open the letter from the grey owl first, which read "YOU ARE A WICKED GIRL. HARRY POTTER DESERVES BETTER. GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM MUGGLE."[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- There is no owl in real life known simply as a "grey owl." This may have been a Great Grey Owl, though these birds are native almost entirely to North America and northern Asia and are not found in Great Britain. Alternatively, it may simply be a description of the bird's colour rather than its species.
