A griffin claw was the claw from a griffin, a magical beast with the front of an eagle and the hindquarters of a lion. It is not specified whether the claws were from the talons of the eagle half of the animal, or the claws of the lion half. When powdered, the claw could be used as an ingredient in the Strengthening Solution.[2]
History[]
In the 1985–1986 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Jacob's sibling and their classmates used this ingredient to brew a strengthening solution in their Potions class.[3]
In 1995, while writing on essay on the correct method of brewing Strengthening Solutions for Professor Snape, Harry Potter put the wrong weight for powdered griffin claw four times, as he was distracted by Fred and George Weasley's demonstration of Puking Pastilles.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- According the legend, if poisoned wine was served in a griffin claw, the claw would change colour and alert the drinker to treachery and deceit.[4]
- Griffin claws were an ingredient in the Beta release of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, but they were cut from the final edit, along with other ingredients and potions.
