A griffin claw was the claw from a griffin, a magical beast with the front of an eagle and the hindquarters of a lion. It is not specified whether the claws were from the talons of the eagle half of the animal, or the claws of the lion half. When powdered, the claw could be used as an ingredient in the Strengthening Solution.
In 1995, while writing on essay on the correct method of brewing Strengthening Solutions for Professor Snape, Harry Potter put the wrong weight for powdered griffin claw four times, as he was distracted by Fred and George Weasley's demonstration of Puking Pastilles.
