"Nevertheless, as they climbed higher and higher, London unfurling below them like a gray-and-green map, Harry's overwhelming feeling was of gratitude for an escape that had seemed impossible. Crouching low over the beast's neck, he clung tight to the metallic scales, and the cool breeze was soothing on his burned and blistered skin, the dragon's wings beating the air like the sails of a windmill."
Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger escape on the dragon.[src]

This dragon of an unknown breed guarded the Lestrange Vault, the older wizarding family's vaults and the object-hiding vaults of Gringotts Wizarding Bank during the 1991 and 1998 Break-In of Gringotts Wizarding Bank.

In 1991 this dragon was placed in Gringotts after the Break-In caused by Quirinus Quirrell. The dragon was young and full of power.

By 1997 the dragon got old and whenever it hears the clanking sound of a mine cart approaching the dragon slinks back to allow clear access to the vault, in fear of being painfully and brutally punished. After the goblin Griphook abandoned them, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger jumped onto the back of this dragon and quickly escaped. They finally jumped off by an unidentified lake, and the dragon then immediately flew off. It is unknown if Gringotts ever got this dragon back or not.

Behind the scenes

  • The dragon is most likely a Hebridean Black : the two chapters involving the dragon ('Gringotts' and 'The Final Hiding Place') include many hints to the dragon's breed: the majority of these point to it being a Black whose physical appearance has been slightly altered by its long incarceration. The Black is also a native of Britain, making it a more likely candidate than the Opaleye or the Ironbelly
  • This dragon could either be an Antipodean Opaleye or a Ukrainian Ironbelly. The only piece of information that contributes to the identification of this one type of dragon is the detail of "metallic scales", which are characteristic of the Ironbelly dragon. It may also be a hybrid of the two breeds.
  • In 1991, when Hagrid talked to Harry about Gringotts (the first time), he told him rumors about there being a dragon guaring Gringotts vaults. Harry, taking interest, tried to coax Hagrid to tell him more about the dragon. However, he does not seem to take any interest in the rest until its appearance in 1998.
