Hanae Katō (加藤花愛, Katō Hanae) was an optimistic Japanese witch and a Mahoutokoro student during the early 21st century. She enjoyed studying Herbology and was good at gardening.

Biography

At some point by 2011, a Mandrake came into Hanae's possessions and was taken care of well. She named it Nozomi, and sometimes thought it was silly to name a plant.

In the 2011–2012 school year, Hanae came to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to represent her school in the Intercontinental Wizard's Cup along with Yumi Ito, Kenji Kobayashi, Tarōbō Amachi, and two other members. During this event, she competed against at least three students from Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Violet Williams, Viggo Victor, Zack Johnson.

During her stay at Hogwarts, she was disappointed that the sun was obscured by clouds and shared this view with her teammates. However, she also admitted that she was impressed by the Hogwarts Library and its collection of books.

Sometime after the first challenge, the uninvited writer Rita Skeeter showed up with her Quick-Quotes Quill to interview each competitor, including Hanae, and overheard the discussion about her teammate Kenji and his blood curse. During the interview, Rita intentionally referenced the curse indirectly, but the team captain Yumi intervened and salvaged the situation before Rita's outrageous questions could proceed further.

At some point after the second challenge, Kenji met Kevin Farrell and another Hogwarts student who, at Yumi's request, was able to persuade him not to resign from the team. He then encountered Hanae before leaving the corridor. She admitted she was afraid of him and his blood curse. The conversation was joined by Yumi and Kevin, and by the end of the discussion, Hanae felt guilty for having judged Kenji earlier because of his curse. Kenji forgave her.

Personality and traits

Hanae was described as sweet, gentle, and helpful, and could sometimes be forgetful.

Magical abilities and skills

• Herbology: Hanae enjoyed studying this subject and was skilled with the handling and cultivation of magical plants, such as Mandrakes.

Behind the scene

• Given that Kenji Kobayashi was in a school year that allowed him to join the team, it was likely that Mahoutokoro used the Japanese school year system. Therefore, Hanae was the only known Mahoutokoro member in the fifth (ninth) year.
