Revision as of 12:37, 28 January 2020

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a video game developed by Jam City, released for mobile devices on 25 April 2018.[2][6][7] It is the first game to be released under Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's Portkey Games label.

In this game, the player creates their own character, and takes on the role of a Hogwarts student. The character experiences all seven years, and takes part in classes as well as extra activities such as the Duelling Club.[6]

Several actors voiced characters that they had played in the Harry Potter films before, including Warwick Davis, Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, Gemma Jones, Zoë Wanamaker and Sally Mortemore.[2][8]

Setting

The player creates a character and follows the story of a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and throughout the game will have to make certain choices which determine the path their character will be placed on, including the kind of relationships they build with other characters. Along with the story told through each chapter, they have the opportunity to achieve rewards by learning spells and potions.

The story follows the character for their seven years of education at Hogwarts from 1984 to 1991. In that time, the game will feature characters known from the books during their student years, including Bill Weasley, Charlie Weasley and Nymphadora Tonks.[7] The game also features teachers who were working at Hogwarts during that time including the characters of Rubeus Hagrid, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall,[7] Albus Dumbledore, Filius Flitwick, and Rolanda Hooch.[9] During the timespan, an infant Harry Potter was only just spared his life. Cedric Diggory was mentioned by his father, that he would be joining Hogwarts as a first year student by the time the player reaches year 6.

Gameplay

The player

The player will receive choices to make throughout the game. The answers they give from a number of three possible answers can determine which wand they receive, how strong their friendship with another character will be or how to deal with a situation which could have an impact on them later in the story. They have the choice of rewards which help contribute to the Courage, Empathy and Knowledge level of the player. The rewards can be earned in classes or by completing pieces of the story. Certain choices may only be available if the player's Courage, Empathy or Knowledge level are high enough.

Levelling up will have all energy restored. By tapping on the character's face on the upper left, current level and level progress bar will be visible underneath the character's name. When the bar is full the player levels up.

Energy

The player completes each chapter for both the classes or the story by using energy to complete tasks. The initial full limit of the player's energy is 24, though it can be broadened throughout the game. When the player uses one energy it will take four minutes for the energy to be added back to the game. The number of energy one general task will take varies between 1 and 5, in special cases, when the outline is red instead of blue, it can take up to 13.

Throughout the game, there are hidden opportunities to gain energy by clicking on a certain character or item. They are known to include:

  • Clicking Borf when he appears between the Grasslands and Forest, so that he reacts and runs away.
  • Clicking the Golden Snitch flying above the Quidditch Pitch, so that it flies away.
  • Clicking the empty portrait placed next to the Charms Classroom so the Girl with Flowers will reappear.
  • Clicking Peeves when he appears between the portrait of Fytherley Undercliffe and the Divination Classroom, so that he laughs and vanishes.
    • This option seemed to only be available after certain events; Peeves used to be a non-interactive element between the Grand Staircase and Courtyard.
  • Clicking the still-life painting in the West Towers that contains white flowers in what appears to be a tree trunk so that three oranges will reappear and the white flowers bounce.
  • Clicking the middle of the three suits of armour on the right of the Great Hall entrance when the middle suit is holding a sword and the right suit a shield, so that they will switch what they are holding.
  • Clicking the unlit torch on the right of the Great Hall entrance so that it will relight.
  • Clicking the unidentified house-elf near the Hogwarts kitchens when it appears to be asleep so that it will run back to the kitchen.
  • Clicking the small branch on the path between the Whomping Willow and Hagrid's Hut so that Fang will fetch it and run down to Hagrid's.
  • Clicking the disorganised books on the bench between the Library and the History of Magic Classroom so that they will be neatly stacked.
  • Clicking the student with a sled standing in the alley between Three Broomsticks and Honeydukes so that he will slide down.
  • Clicking the black spider on the spider web in the Forbidden Forest so that the web will flop down and the spider will bounce off to the tree roots, with the web springing back up afterwards.
  • Clicking the sack of gold in the walkway between Flourish and Blotts and the Leaky Cauldron (in front of Gringotts Wizarding Bank) so that a Niffler will pop out from nearby boxes and take the sack of gold, while accidentally dropping a few gold while it runs away.
    • This option currently contains an unfixed glitch where after earning the energy, immediately reentering the location after going somewhere else, would have the sack of gold back present without being actually clickable.
  • Clicking the tentacle of the Giant Squid around a rock in the Black Lake.

The player cannot go over the energy limit except in a few instances (buying energy with diamonds, levelling up friendships, duelling club, getting energy from pets). Thus, tapping the above locations with a full energy bar will not help the player get more energy.

Sometimes when the player runs out of energy in the middle of a task, the option of watching a 30 second advertisement to get 3 bolts of energy would be presented. One must keep pressing until seeing the "Out of Energy" message in order to see this option.

In-App purchases

The game offers a reward or purchase of coins and diamonds which can be used to buy in-app purchases including more energy or even clothes, hairstyles and accessories for the character. The coins will also need to be used to complete a certain part of the chapter including 100 coins to build a relationship with another character or learning to duel.

At the beginning of Year 1 Chapter 7, a special 48 hour sale is prompted to buy 130 gems for $0.99 (originally $4.99).

House Cup

The player will win or lose House points throughout the game which could depend on their choices. Their ranking will be placed on the Leaderboard for how many points they have earned overall for the House. They will be placed in a list of randomised students and their choices could have an impact on the House placement in the rankings overall. The winner of the House Cup at the end of the year will be rewarded with an increasing number of Gems beginning with 100 Gems for first year, 125 Gems for second year, and 150 Gems for third year.

Story, classes, and side quests

The game-playing takes places in two sections: the story and the classes aspect, with the addition of side quests. The player will not need in each chapter to complete a class or a side quest and then move on to the story. They can complete in the order and the pace they decide. However, the game will not allow the player to move on to the next chapter or part of the chapter unless the player completes both the story and class.

To complete a class, the player earns stars within a time limit choice of either 1hr, 3hrs or 8hrs which effect the number of stars they can earn and therefore the rewards. If reaching the maximum star before the class hour is up, the player can leave class early. In each class, they will have to trace spells or rotate potions in an similar way to an old Pottermore feature. The player could be asked a question about the subject during the class, and providing the right answer will reward the player with their choice of energy, points, coins or diamonds. Everyone will receive the same questions but the order in which they are asked throughout each chapter will be randomised. For example, one player could answer the same question earlier in the game than another player who will receive another question instead at that point.

Duelling

When encountering a duel, the game offers three choices: Sneaky, Defensive and Aggressive. Sneaky defeats Defensive, Aggressive defeats Sneaky and Defensive defeats Aggressive. If losing, the player may spend a certain number of coins awarded in the game, and try again.

The occasional Duelling Club events may grant different prizes for every win; the Duelling Room is located in Dungeons; when opened, the player gets 3 tickets for the entire time period. For every duel won, would sometimes earn +4 energy or be rewarded with coins.

Some charms, spells and potions cannot be learnt by attending classes, and must be taught via side quests or achieving a certain number of wins in Duelling Club. For example: Leek jinx is a gifted 'Sneaky' Duelling move by defeating 20 duelists in a day while the club was still an exclusive club.

Friendship

In the App update released on 30 May, 2018, players now are able to build friendship outside of the main story arc. This new feature disabled the old "Explore" function those three locations used to have, in which the player could enter, but only to look around as there was no interactive setup.

  • Meal with a Friend: Located at the Great Hall, 10hrs for the next cycle after playing; previously costs 85 coins.
  • Play Gobstones: Located at the Courtyard, 16hrs for the next cycle after playing; previously costs 100 coins.
  • Drink Butterbeer: Located at the Three Broomsticks, 16hrs for the next cycle after playing; previously costs 100 coins. Unlocked after Year 3 Chapter 8.

The amount of experience gained peer interaction increases every time the player starts a new year. However, the required number of points is also higher for friends who are unlocked at later points in the game.

Some characters are unavailable in certain activities. Fred Weasley cannot be interacted with in the Three Broomsticks due to being a first year student in Year 6. Murphy McNully cannot play Gobstones. After completing Year 5, Bill Weasley is not available for friendship interactions at all, but he later becomes available again for Butterbeer. Rubeus Hagrid is not available for these interactions at all, and friendship with him is built by completing side quests involving magical creatures.

Sometimes, events make certain friends temporarily unavailable, for example Tulip Karasu at the beginning of Year 4, as she is first missing and then sent to the Hospital Wing.

Tapping the character icons of friends on the bottom right of the screen, shows friendship levels. After a certain level, the reward for levelling up friendship is energy. The higher the next friendship level, the higher the energy reward (+5, +10, +15, etc.) until reaching max friendship level. Reaching the maximum friendship level (10) gives a special reward.

Dating

It is possible that, with future updates, the player will be able to date other characters as their friendship advances to a greater level; this was hinted by Andre Egwu at Hogsmeade during the third year. Some commentators believe that those may include same-sex dates as well as opposite-sex ones.[10]

The first cases of dating or resembling dating were in the "Celestial Ball" and "First Date" achievement quests, but no full relationships are present in the game yet. Additionally, there are a few dialogue options where the player can mention having feelings for certain characters.

Pets

In the App update released on 26 June, 2018, players now have the option to purchase pets. Players can purchase various types of pets, as listed below. After purchasing the base skin, the player can purchase additional skins for pets for coins, gems or brown notebooks. The player can keep a pet with them at all times, with additional pets being kept in the player's dormitory. Tapping and awakening sleeping pets can give players energy. In an update on the 28 September, 2018, it became possible to purchase magical pets, a crup and a streeler. Both of these are available to purchase with notebooks, a new currency available through completing classes and events. More magical pets have been added since, along with two Hallowe'en pets, which were originally event exclusive but are now available for notebooks.

As the player tries to find out what happened to their older brother, Jacob, the existence of the Cursed Vaults is revealed, with Ice Knights and the Vanished Stairs decided to be researched upon. At the end of the school year, Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore promises to discuss the Cursed Vaults and Jacob another time.

Meanwhile, the player, with the help of Rowan Khanna, continues to search for clues about the Vanished Stairs and the Cursed Vaults, sneaking into a common room from another House. They successfully locate the Vault of Ice, but results in Rowan being injured; the player is subsequently introduced to Bill Weasley for further help.

After being trained, the player with two friends venture into the Vault of Ice where they find a notebook and broken wand and a voice tells the player to never let "her" find the other ones. Near the end of term, Dumbledore tells the player that they have something important to talk about at the end of next year.

The player also becomes closer friends with Nymphadora Tonks, Tulip Karasu, and eventually Barnaby Lee; the latter two formerly being close friends of Merula Snyde.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry suffers from several Boggart attacks not long after the start of term, which is concluded to be caused by another Cursed Vault. The player, with the help of friends, locates and ventures into the Vault of Fear. With the use of Jacob's wand found in the last vault, they find a map of the Forbidden Forest and an arrow.

By the end of term, Dumbledore tells the player he has been looking for the world's finest Curse-Breaker, Patricia Rakepick and that he invited her to join them next school year. He also warns the player to not break anymore rules.

Year Four of the game contains 17 chapters. Aside from the five previous classes, the player gets to participate in Care of Magical Creatures in addition, where they catch up and spend more time with Charlie Weasley.

At the start of term, Professor Albus Dumbledore introduces the students to Curse-Breaker Patricia Rakepick, who tells the students not to go look for the Cursed Vaults. Hogwarts students become largely affected by the Sleepwalking curse, with most students heading towards the Forbidden Forest, which is concluded to be a likely location for another vault. The broken arrow found in the previous vault is believed to have belonged to Centaurs; upon studying and asking around, the player befriended Centaur Torvus, who formerly owned the arrow.

As the player tries to locate the vault, Rakepick occasionally lends her Niffler, Sickleworth, to help out. The Forest Vault is found, the player hears the mysterious voice (believed to be Jacob's) telling the player that they're "nearly there", but that all vaults but the last one are false, meant to be distractions and traps. The voice reveals they are trapped within the next vault, and that only the player can free them, and that then they can find the final vault together, as "they" cannot be allowed to find it first. Using Torvus' arrow, a portrait of a dragon and a small sweater are revealed.

Due to a history of rule-breaking, the player is set to serve detention under Pitts the House-elf in the kitchens, beginning on the first day of their Fifth year, until the player has "learned their lesson". The player also learns that Rakepick will depart from the role of a curse-breaking consultant, and step in as the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor for the next school year.

The names of Achievements, as shown in the game's Achievement display, often are different from what were being displayed during the limited-time events, with most of them matching the respective first Side Quests of each Achievements, while Jam City also sometimes additionally refer to them differently, and not the actual names of Achievements:

Mentioned

The following characters never appear in the game, and are not Hogwarts students or staff members during the events of the game. They were mentioned in a trivia hint, were a selectable option in a trivia answer or mentioned by other characters.

Areas

Behind the scenes

  • It was released on the 24th of April in some countries.
  • Side Quests can carry over to the next school Year, though it is suggested to complete them during the Year they were released in, in order to keep the plot within continuity.[29][30][31]
  • While players are only able to interactively participate in Charms, Potions, and Flying during year 1, Transfiguration as an addition in year 2, Herbology as an addition in year 3; the characters of the players are actually attending all canon classes.[32]
    • In Year 1 for example, if the player is in Hufflepuff, Rowan Khanna will mention Herbology and say it would have been more enjoyable were they not having to worry about a murderous plant. It was later brought up in the Side Quests of Chapter 8 in Year 1 in Hufflepuff's house meeting, where they discussed how to help their Head of House, Pomona Sprout, amongst other things. Depending on the players' choice, one conclusion was to help out their Professor clean up after their class.
    • In Year 2 Chapter 5, when visiting Rowan in the Hospital Wing, Jacob's sibling brought their star chart from Astronomy Class.
  • The player may create their own name if they wish, but there are player names which are banned for unknown reasons, including the name Roland. However, should one feel that their names may be mistakenly excluded, the game developer, Jam City, stated that they welcome the feedback so they can take a closer look.[33]
    • Interestingly, the name "Jacob" is not banned, meaning that both the player and his/her brother can share the same name.
  • On the leaderboard, the majority of the names of other students and their appearance are randomised for that player, and the only names which are the same for everyone will be for game-playing characters like Merula Snyde or Ben Copper. The randomised names are similar and can even be the same, with popular surnames being Nguyen, Hernandez, Miller, Young, and Carter.
  • The following characters were attending Hogwarts or would have begun attending Hogwarts during the years the player attended from 1984 until 1991. However, they have not been mentioned in relation to the game or are known to appear in the game: Gwenog Jones (graduated 1986/1987), Marcus Flint (Sorted 1986), Penelope Clearwater and Oliver Wood (Sorted 1987), Roger Davies, Angelina Johnson, Lee Jordan, Adrian Pucey, Alicia Spinnet, Patricia Stimpson, and Kenneth Towler (Sorted 1989).
  • There were a few other characters from Harry Potter's early years at Hogwarts who would have attended around the same time including Quidditch players and Prefects like Terence Higgs and Robert Hilliard.
  • Based solely on their birth year (though it is not known if they attended Hogwarts), these characters could also have attended Hogwarts during that time: Dunbar Oglethorpe (b. 1968), Heathcote Barbary (b. 1974), Herman Wintringham (b. 1974), Stanley Shunpike (b. 1974/1975), and Gideon Crumb (b. 1975).
  • The additional Hogwarts staff from 1984 would have been composed of: Quirinus Quirrell (Muggle Studies, at least in the late 1980s). It is unknown if Bathsheda Babbling already taught Study of Ancient Runes.
  • Even though the Duelling Club has been confirmed to feature in the game,[6] it was originally created by Gilderoy Lockhart in the 1992–1993 school year. It is possible that several different Duelling Clubs were founded and dissolved throughout the history of Hogwarts.
  • In Chapter 1 of Year 2, the player will be told they need to sneak into another House's common room to find an object. The House common room they will sneak into will be different for every House. It could be randomised and ensures the player simply went to another House’s common room. If there's a pattern, it appears Ravenclaw and Slytherin will sneak into the Gryffindor common room, and Hufflepuff and Gryffindor will sneak into the Slytherin common room.
  • During Year 1, Professor Snape is mentioned to be petitioning for the Defence Against the Dark Arts position. The current DADA teacher was having trouble, and the curse on the position is mentioned by Rowan.
  • Within the APK file of the game there exist various images of shapes that correspond to the shapes one must draw in order to cast spells. Many of these shapes are different from the shapes that are used in the final game. For example, a shape like a number four is used to represent Alohomora (similar to Wonderbook: Book of Spells), while the game uses a more circular gesture.
  • In Hogsmeade, some shop names are shortened:
  • The kitchens were previously shown as a location unlocked in Year 5 but the location was changed into a hidden location.
  • In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in Chapter 9: The Writing on the Wall, Ron tells Harry "I think someone told me a story about a secret chamber at Hogwarts once. Might have been Bill." It could be that Bill has told Ron about the cursed vaults at some point between the 1985–1986 school year and the 1992–1993 school year.
  • Achievement "Packmates" was previously titled and displayed as "Chiara" when it was released around 30 October 2019, but was renamed some time in November that year.

Mistakes

Fixed errors

  • When Year 3 was first released, in the friends section, Bill Weasley's year showed up as 3, even though it was supposed to be 5, and was correctly shown on the leaderboard. It was resolved in a couple of days.
  • Andre Egwu and Ismelda Murk were initially missing from the Leaderboard; both were added after the update on 14 June 2018.
    • Ismelda's surname was initially incorrectly shown as "Placeholder," but was corrected after the update on 21 June 2018.
    • Liz Tuttle was initially missing from the Leaderboard; added after the update on 16 August 2018.
  • Side Quest "Nearly Headless Nick":
    • Sometimes appears four times in the side quest section, sometimes not at all.
    • Sometimes, after reopening the app while waiting for a task, the ending cutscene of the previous task is shown again, although the waiting time does not reset, indicating that this is not due to the game not properly saving.
    • Disappeared shortly after it was added, making it impossible for players to complete unless they were quick.
    • All the above was later fixed on 28 June 2018.
  • For a short while in Year 4, Defence Against the Dark Arts classes gave empathy instead of courage. The Ghoul lesson, however, already gave courage when the class was added.
  • For a short while in Year 5, 5-star Defence Against the Dark Arts classes could be completed with just 45 energy in total, giving players a faster way to earn house points and crests for special events. This was, however, fixed after around a week.
  • For a short window, Achievement "Howling Hallowe'en" was briefly located in Year 1, with Fenrir Greyback misspelled as "Fenrir Greenback" in its description, though the quest was no longer visible shortly afterwards. This typo was fixed and the Achievement was added back to Year 1 on 18 October 2018.
  • Prior to the release of the first part of Year 5, friend characters whose standard outfits differed from the Hogwarts uniform would wear their standard outfits when appearing in classes rather than the uniform (even though this would have got them in trouble in real life), this was fixed upon release of the start of year five so characters always wear their uniform in classes.
  • In Liz Tuttle's Year 4 quiz, when asked which object was found in the Forest Vault, dragon portrait used to be an incorrect answer choice despite it being true. This was later corrected.
  • When Muffliato was first featured as an upcoming Charms lesson in Year 5, around 7 March, 2019, it was incorrectly spelled as Muffilato; this was corrected on 21 March, 2019.
  • In the classes section, the icon for Divinations was the same as for History of Magic. This was fixed on 25 July, 2019.
  • Shortly after the start of Year 6, players received notifications for a quest called "PEN-FRIEND OR FOE" or "Y6_TLSQBeauxbatonsC1" (the latter was likely a code name for the former), but no signs of a new time limited side quest.
    • Strangely, when the Achievement actually came out, it was actually revealed to be Year 2 rather than Year 6. This may indicate that the quest was originally supposed to take place in Year 6, but was later changed to take place in Year 2 instead.
  • After the player reached level 46/47/48, the XP bar no longer increased, but it did not say it is the maximum level like it did previously, as maximum levels have been increased multiple times. This mistake was later fixed in around late July or early August 2019.
  • Following the Christmas update in December 2019, the student with the sled in Hogsmeade was missing, and players could not get energy from this spot. This was fixed soon afterwards.
  • George Weasley was initially not available as a friend following the completion of Year 6 Chapter 14 except for a few players, for whom friendship activities with him were glitched. This was fixed on 14 January, 2020.

Overall

  • The world-class broomstick Firebolt was released in 1993, yet during Flying Classes as early in 1984, Firebolt could be mentioned in a few situations, predating the broom's canon existence by almost a decade:
    • The question "A Firebolt is a type of what?" could be asked.
    • Rolanda Hooch provides a trivia hint, telling the player to familiarise with "Cleansweep, Comet, Nimbus and Firebolt."
      • A reduced statement "Cleansweep, Comet and Nimbus" is now offered, though the one with Firebolt is still around.
    • The question "Which of these is not a broom?" could be asked, Firebolt being one of the choices.
  • A couple of known students are missing from the Leaderboard, including:
  • Merula Snyde and Ismelda Murk have double entries on the Leaderboard after the update on 2 May, 2019.
  • The question on who the Divination Professor was could be asked, and one of the options was Professor Umbridge. The player character's wouldn't receive that as an option, because Professor Umbridge worked at the Ministry of Magic and would not become the unlikely Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor until 1995.
  • Though Severus Snape gave a speech about "little foolish wand-waving [in Potions class]" during his introduction for the subject for the 1991–1992 school year, in the game, he clearly used his wand to move phials of ingredients to his potions when he demonstrates. The students, on the other hand, add the same ingredients by hand, though in certain situation, they would cast Lumos in order to properly look through the shelves to search for ingredients.
    • It is possible that Snape did not consider this kind of magic foolish, or he was referring to subjects like Charms, where amateur students wave their wand around without success towards creating the spell. Or, he changed his teaching method at some point before the 1991–1992 school year.
  • In Defence Against the Dark Arts, Professor Rakepick occasionally asks a question involving Horcruxes. Since Horcruxes are extremely dark magic and not known to common Wizarding knowledge, it would be unlikely that she would have Horcruxes in her curriculum. Even if she wanted to (which is likely, given her nature), she would likely get into huge trouble if anyone tells.
  • At the end of each year in the game, the House Cup is given out to the house with the most House points. While any house can win the cup in all of the years in the game, it is mentioned in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone that Slytherin has won the cup for six straight years, from the 1985–1986 school year to the 1990 to 1991 school year, which take place during Jacob's sibling's second to seventh years. This would also mean that Slytherin didn't win the cup in the 1984–1985 school year, which would take place during Jacob's sibling's first year. However, in the game, Slytherin can win the House Cup in that year.
  • All classes contain students from a specific House instead of having two Houses in a class (not including Jacob's sibling and Rowan)
    • All the Slytherin students are in Potions.
    • All the Gryffindor students are in Charms.
    • All the Ravenclaw students are in Transfiguration
    • All the Hufflepuff students are in Herbology.
    • Flying Class, Care for Magical Creatures, Defence against the Dark Arts, and History of Magic are the only exceptions for there are students from every House (although Care of Magical Creatures shows a Slytherin majority, Charlie Weasley being the most notable exception).
      • Ben and Penny were present in Care for Magical Creatures' first lesson but then disappeared after that, for they don't show up in any classes after that.
  • In Potions Class, Jacob's sibling and Merula Snyde appear to share a cauldron. However, they are mentioned to brew potions separately.
  • The hourglasses in the Great Hall do not accurately show the House Cup rankings.
  • McGonagall is misspelled "McGongall" in some of Bill Weasley's friendship activities.
  • Players on the leaderboard with clothes from events with clothing that appears different based on the player's house have clothes of the player's house regardless of the house they're in.
  • Only one male fifth year student and one female fifth year student from each house can become Prefect each year. However, if Jacob's sibling is a male fifth year Gryffindor, they can become a Prefect despite Charlie Weasley, another male fifth year Gryffindor, also becoming a Prefect in the same year.
  • There is a glitch affecting some players where locations in the Castle Grounds and Dungeons have switched places.
  • The player character is used as a sort of teaching assistant to help Professor Flitwick in Charms classes despite being unqualified and despite Flitwick being otherwise depicted as a competent teacher that shouldn't have to rely on an unqualified child to help him.
  • In October and December, locations are decorated with Hallowe'en and Christmas decorations (and snow is added to some locations in December as well), respectively, regardless of the player's progress. This can lead to quests having decorations if the player completes them in October or December, even if they are meant to take place in different months in-universe.

Quidditch

  • In Chapter 1, Penny states that she and Jacob's sibling are in the section of whichever house the player is in, but they are always shown to be in Hufflepuff's section.
  • In Season 1 Chapter 3, it is stated that no games have been played that year, and in Chapter 8, it is stated that it is the first Quidditch Cup match. However, if the quest is meant to take place after Year 2 Chapter 6 (as Quidditch is specifically unlocked at that point), causes a contradiction, as the Gryffindor vs. Slytherin match is played in Year 2 Chapter 3.
  • If Jacob's sibling becomes a permanent member of a Quidditch team in Year 5 or earlier, it conflicts with the fact that Jacob's sibling has to sneak into the common rooms during Quidditch matches in Year 5 Chapter 21.
  • Andre Egwu and Charlie Weasley are absent for Ravenclaw and Gryffindor players, respectively, despite the fact that both are meant to be on the team starting in the second year (although Andre can be temporarily suspended from the team, this does not happen until years later in the "Poor Sport" side quest). This is a contradiction as specific unidentified characters are shown as the Seeker and Keeper of the player's team, and they are clearly not Charlie and Andre.
  • The first match is against Hufflepuff (Slytherin for Hufflepuffs). This means that unless there has been an unexplained rescheduling of games, only Ravenclaws play against the correct opponent.
  • In the "Searching for a Comet" time limited side quest, Ravenclaw players sneak into the Slytherin Common Room and get caught by Professor Snape, which contradicts Gemma Farley's claim that no non-Slytherins had managed to sneak into the Slytherin Common Room in seven centuries.
  • For Gryffindor and Slytherin players, the Gryffindor-Slytherin match is played in Chapter 10 but during the match, Jacob's sibling is supposed to be sneaking into a common room.
  • In Chapter 10, Murphy states that it is the second match of the year, but by that point, there have already been two matches (the player's team against Hufflepuff or Slytherin and the match between the other two teams). As such, it should be the third match of the year.
  • It is possible for Slytherin to win the match against Gryffindor in Chapter 10, which contradicts the information given in the "Slytherin Schemes" side quest, where it is stated that Gryffindor won the match.
  • In Chapter 11, the two petrified students can be seen in Hospital Wing, but they are not supposed to be there until Year 6.
  • In the books, it is stated that Gryffindor won the Quidditch Cup in the 1985–1986 school year, the year during which Quidditch Season 1 is supposed to take place. However, for non-Gryffindor players, it is impossible for Gryffindor to win the Quidditch Cup as either the player's house, Ravenclaw or Slytherin (if the player is in Ravenclaw) wins.

Year One

  • Achievement "Party Planner" and its Side Quests seemingly contains continuity errors along with other mistakes, as documented here.
  • Achievement "Howling Hallowe'en" and its Side Quests
    • Fenrir Greyback remained in human form while his two companions were in werewolf forms; Chiara Lobosca was revealed to be a werewolf as well, yet also remained in her human form in the same scene.
    • Penny revealed her fear for werewolves and having a friend killed by one, which originally debut respectively in Chapter 1 of Year 3 and Side Quest "Penny for Your Thoughts", both over at least one year in the future of this Year 1 Achievement.
      • Even if the event is meant to take place after "Penny for your thoughts", it could still be considered a mistake as Penny could drink the Forgetfulness Potion, causing her to forget about this event.
    • Fenrir Greyback was noted to be strong, yet Jacob's sibling could easily defeat him in a duel.
    • If Achievement "Howling Hallowe'en" is played during the player's second year when Ben is missing, Ben will be seen in the Charms Classroom when you interview Professor Flitwick. This is one of those Gameplay and Story Segregation situation.
    • Liz Tuttle, Barnaby Lee, and Ismelda Murk are all visible and can be interacted with in certain tasks. The player meets all three of them in Year 3, as this is a Year 1 Achievement the player wouldn't have met them and shouldn't know who they are. Barnaby is also mentioned several times as if the player knows him as his uncle Cecil Lee plays a role in this event, yet as mentioned the player should have no clue who Barnaby is.
  • Achievement "Christmas at Hogwarts" and its Side Quests
    • The achievement is placed in Year 1, but everything in the event seems to imply it takes place in Year 3 or later.
      • Jacob's sibling already knows Bill, Tonks and Charlie.
      • Prefect badges appear based on the player's progress.
      • Penny mentions Scarlett, a mention which only makes sense if it happened before Side Quest "Penny for Your Thoughts" took place (sometime after the first herbology class during the 1986–1987 school year,) or if the player completed the said quest and persuaded Penny to not drink the Forgetfulness Potion.
      • Arthur mentions the player having adventures with the Cursed Vaults, but the player does not enter a Cursed Vault until the end of Year 2.
    • Information on whether Percy Weasley is already attending Hogwarts seems to be contradicting. Molly mentions Percy being at home alongside his younger siblings (Bill and Charlie specifically had to stay at Hogwarts due to the mess at the Burrow) but the player only wonders about meeting Fred, George, Ron and Ginny.
      • It is possible the player is simply not interested in meeting Percy.

Year Two

  • In Side Quest "Help Hagrid!," when the player helps save Fang from Devil's Snare, Hagrid asks the player what he should name the dog and says he's a new puppy. However, Fang could be found in the game from the beginning in Year 1 which was a year ago by that point in the game. Fang wouldn't be new by then and it makes no sense why Hagrid would wait that long before naming him.
  • In Side Quest "Sleep Walker," the sleep walking girl's appearance and house are inconsistent.
  • Achievement "Become an Honorary Rocker" and its Side Quests
    • This quest occurs after the completion of Chapter 4, but the player only befriends Bill after completing Chapter 6, which seems odd, as the side quest includes options which are only available by having a certain friendship level with Bill.
    • Orsino Thruston is already at Hogwarts. However, he was born in 1976, meaning he should not start at Hogwarts until at least Year 4.
    • In the Artefact Room, the player tells the player (using the player character's name) to keep going. It seems more reasonable that Myron, the only other person in the room, is supposed to say the line instead.
    • Some characters (such as Barnaby Lee, Nymphadora Tonks, Ismelda Murk, Talbott Winger, Badeea Ali, Diego Caplan, Jae Kim, Liz Tuttle, Tulip Karasu and Charlie Weasley) that the player was established to not having met during Year Two are visible during the concert section. Whilst it is possible for these characters to attend the concert without having personally met the player, some such as Barnaby and Tonks can be interacted with during this section as if the player knows them, however as this is set prior to the player meeting them they would not know who these people are.
  • Achievement "Hosting the Beauxbatons" and its Side Quests
    • When Rowan first talks in the quest, a voice clip from Jae Kim is used instead.
    • Despite the fact that the quest is listed as Year 2, Year 5 players, after completing Achievements occurring in-universally in later years, and even getting an Achievement (Packmates) that was released in the real world later than this one, this Achievement is for unknown reason still not accessible.
  • Achievement "Packmates" and its Side Quests
    • The quest is only available after the completion of Chapter 5,[citation needed] but there is a Quidditch match in Year 2 Chapter 3, and Quidditch matches are normally not played until November while Ben mentions that it is Hallowe'en.
      • Even if it is set before Chapter 3, it still causes a contradiction, as Ben is supposed to be missing at that point.
    • In the meal with Chiara the first two questions are repeated over and over for some players, with some also reporting that the correct answer seemed to change each time as well.
    • Despite the fact that the quest is listed as Year 2, there are various dialogue options that alter depending on the player's year. For example, for Year 6 players, Ben's dialogue is changed to match his new personality despite this new personality only appearing in Year 6 and not as far back as Year 2, and the player character can mention that they have already found their brother which happened at the end of Year 5, over three years after this side quest takes place, whereas Year 5 players before the characteristic change still get the Ben with his old personality.
      • For Years 5 and 6 players, Pippa is still said to be a third year rather than a sixth or seventh year, which should be the case if the dialogue was year adjusted, or else Pippa would not start Hogwarts until 1986 or 1987 and should not be present for players in Years 2.
    • The attributes required to have a meal with and duel Chiara during the Side Quest are based off of the player's attribute levels (with the meal being the same attributes and the duel one higher on each) leading to later year player's to eat with and duel a Chiara that has much higher stats than what a second year typically would have.
  • Achievement "Christmas at the Burrow" and its Side Quests
    • The Achievement is set in Year 2, but like with the "Packmates" achievement, dialogue is changed depending on the player's year. In Year 6, Bill wears his Curse-Breaker outfit and states that he is no longer a student at the school, and the twins are mentioned to go home.
    • Bill tells the player they should have seen how Fred and George dressed a gnome the previous year. However, with this achievement set in Year 2 and "Christmas at Hogwarts" set in Year 1, these achievements should occur in consecutive years and, as such, Bill spent the previous Christmas at Hogwarts with the player and other friends, and as such, he should not have been able to see the gnome dressed by Fred and George either.
      • In the final task, Bill also compares the decorations at the Burrow to the ones in the previous year.
    • The hands on the Weasley Clock are constantly moving, even though they should all point at home.

Year Three

  • In Side Quest "Giant Problems," when Fang needed to be found, the player can continue gaining one energy by clicking on the branch on the path to Hagrid's Hut, which makes the missing Fang appear.
  • Jacob's sibling can access Hogsmeade in Chapter 1 if choosing to start the "Giant Problems" Side Quest. However, in Chapter 2, it will appear as if Jacob's sibling had never been to Hogsmeade.
  • In Side Quest "Farewell My Prefect," when brewing the Babbling Beverage and choosing to read the instructions, the player mentions Penny being there. Jacob's sibling and the Prefect are the only two in the Potions Classroom at the moment.
  • Mice to Snuffboxes is learned in Transfiguration Class in Year 3. However, during the 1991–1992 school year, Harry and his Transfiguration Class learns this same spell in their first year and even have it on their practical exam.[34]
    • It could be that Professor McGonagall changed the order that she taught certain spells between Jacob's sibling's time at Hogwarts and Harry's time at Hogwarts.
  • When Year 3 is completed, it is shown as "Chapter 8 completed" when it should be Chapter 11. For players who have reached Chapter 11 before its release on 7 June 2018, they do not get to see the official chapter title.
  • Achievement "Become an Animagus" and its Side Quests
    • The quest is supposed to happen directly after Chapter 3. However, at that point, the player is not yet friends with Tulip Karasu and Barnaby Lee, but they are their friends during the quest.
    • If Jacob's sibling is in Hufflepuff, the exclamation of surprise upon seeing Penny Haywood in their Potions class would make no sense, for Penny should have been in the same class to begin with.
    • During the Gobstones game with Talbott Winger, Charlie Weasley's voice clips are used.
  • Achievement "The Frog Choir" and its Side Quests
    • The achievement is placed in Year 3, however, Chester is shown to be no longer attending Hogwarts, when he is only supposed to be graduating at the end of that year.
  • Achievement "Birds Of A Feather" and its Side Quests
    • At one point, Jacob's sibling mentions being an unregistered Animagus even if they chose to register (although another point in the side quest takes this choice into account).
    • Talbott fakes a letter from Rakepick to get Merula to the Courtyard, but as the quest is set in Year 3, Rakepick should not be at Hogwarts yet.
    • When searching in the Training Grounds, the characters mention grass and spotting something white. However, if the player plays the quest in December, the area is covered in snow, and as such, these mentions do not make sense.

Year Four

  • Side Quest "The Trouble with Tonks"
    • In the library, a speech bubble is shown above nothing. When tapped, it shows the name Andre, even though Andre is nowhere to be seen.
    • It is mentioned that Bellatrix Lestrange and Filch did not get along while she was attending Hogwarts, but Bellatrix graduated in 1969 or 1970[35] while Filch only started working at Hogwarts in around 1973.[36]
    • On the training grounds, two models of Tonks briefly appear before the beginning of the duel.
  • If the player was confirmed to be selected as a Prefect in the following year, some characters on the leaderboard can be seen wearing Prefect badges, even if they are below Year 4. The player's character would also have the badge on display when donning school uniform, even though they technically haven't actually become one at that point.
    • The player will also wear a Prefect badge in all side quests taking before Year 4 in parts where they are forced to wear robes.
  • Achievement "Conjure a Patronus" and its Side Quests
    • The player has the ability to use Legilimency on Merula despite the fact that they do not know they have the ability until their fifth year.
  • Achievement "First Date"
    • Ismelda mentions what happened in the "Crushed" side quest, which takes place a year later.
    • Charlie mentions Frog Spawn Soap ending up in his bath, which happens in Year 5.
    • If MC chooses to date Penny and to fancy Penny in Year 5, the reveal seems to be surprising despite the fact that the two already went on a date (although at that point in Year 5, the game had no way of knowing if the two had already been on a date).

Year Five

  • For all of Year 5, Bill is still wearing the Prefect badge, when, as a Head Boy, he should be wearing the Head Boy badge instead.
  • Side Quest "Yer a Prefect"
    • On the training grounds, two models of Elora Dunn briefly appear before the beginning of the duel.
    • During the meeting of the Prefects in the Three Broomsticks Inn, Bill Weasley states that he chose to not wear his robes and Prefect badge to the meeting. However, Bill is still wearing his Prefect badge at the meeting.
  • For some players, Beatrice Haywood's head and arms appear detached from the rest of her body when she is stuck in a portrait.
  • Jae Kim and Badeea Ali can be interacted with in classes as early as Year 5 Chapter 1 but when the player meets them in the story, they are complete strangers.
  • In the "Animagus Adventure" side quest, the name of the Jobberknoll is occasionally misspelled as "Jabberknoll."
  • Achievement "Ordinary Wizarding Level" happens after Chapter 24. There are, however, multiple classes in Chapter 25 onwards. In Chapter 27, it is stated that the O.W.L.s has already happened, but there are still multiple classes to take. Things learned afterwards did not come up in the test.
  • The Draught of Peace is listed among Year 5 Potions, but is never marked as completed. It is likely meant to be completed in Chapter 5, where Penny brews it.

Year Six

  • Despite the fact that the characters are now meant to take N.E.W.T. level subjects, the classes appear identical to the ones in earlier years. For example, in Charms class, all students are from Gryffindor and the player's house. Nymphadora Tonks, a Hufflepuff, had to take N.E.W.T. level Charms in order to become an Auror, but is absent.
  • The Divination class at the end of the chapter appears to be their first Divination class ever, but as they are sixth years, they should have already had Divination for three years.
  • The player continues taking Potions even if they received an O.W.L. grade lower than Outstanding, but Snape typically only allows students who got an O to continue Potions, at least if the advice McGonagall gave to Harry for NEWT subjects is accurate. Similarly, the player continues taking other subjects (such as Transfiguration) with an Acceptable grade even if the requirement is Exceeds Expectations.

  29. I'd recommend completing all side quests before advancing year in #HogwartsMystery . It's a great way to earn House Points and those quests are set in the year when they appear. by Matt London on Twitter
  30. Yes we wrote the NHNick quest to add more Year 3 story. It is set during Year 3. Once a side quest spawns we don’t despawn it. That may cause continuity breaks (eg Ben missing and in common room) but getting to play the quests is more important. by Matt London on Twitter
  31. Yes it’s year 3 also. You’ll see scenes that confirm it. I wrote polyjuice and NHN at the same time. by Matt London on Twitter
