The Harry Potter Wiki wants you! Together we are building an encyclopedia and a wiki community based around Harry Potter. You can edit and create articles on Harry Potter Wiki right now. If you haven't done so already, you may want to create an account.

For help, questions, and contact information, you should see Help:Contents.

See Harry Potter Wiki:Rollback and Harry Potter Wiki:Requests for permissions. I think we should give out the rollback permission fairly liberally. So basically, anyone with good edits here and that seems trustworthy should get it. Also, anyone that can prove they are in good standing at another wiki should be eligible. Anyone have any comments or idea on criteria? John Reaves (talk) 23:19, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Improvement Drives

I also think we should start Improvement Drives, or something like that. Looking around, I have really noticed that many articles, such as Narcissa Malfoy, have not been updated since Deathly Hallows came out! Updating is needed on many things. Padme829 01:37, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Padme829

Hi. I think we need a policy concerning sourcing articles on this wiki. Every article should state where it comes from (be it book, movie, game, info from JKR, etc), with articles that come from more than one source listing all sources. This would, in my opinion, help stop vandalism and fanon entering this wiki. To illustrate my point, this article, "Wizards & Witchs in the United States‎", appears to me to be fanon. However, I don't own a copy of Quidditch Through the Ages or Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and therefore can't confirm it as not coming from those books. Anyone else agree? - Cavalier One 17:23, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

I fully agree. This wikia still needs a lot of work to be done until it is up to scratch with others (like Wookiepedia) in policies, content, ect. —Animagi/Prongs 15:47, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
Wookieepedia is an excellent example. I edit over there as well, and there are guidelines for everything - article layout, tenses, templates, etc. Unsourced articles are immediately tagged for verification or deletion. We need some of that here. - Cavalier One 15:52, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
And the sooner the better. Combating the creep of fanon is Wookieepedia's most recurring problem, IMO. I created Template:Verify for this purpose—any objections to the grace period of 7 days? Gonk (Gonk!) 15:21, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Married names

I've noticed that both Hermione's and Ginny's summary boxes have their "married" names. I don't think they should be that way. It misrepresents the characters as they appear throughout the books: the profiles should focus on the characters as they were during the seven years covered in the main story arc of the books. The characters' marriages to Ron and Harry is a footnote to the story, so causing it to have such a strong representation in the character summaries seems wrong. Does anyone agree? EDIT: I just discovered Luna has a married name as well... what the?

Similarly I have a problem with Tonks' profile suggesting her name is Nymphadora Lupin (nee Tonks). Although my case is a lot weaker for this one, we don't actually know that she takes Lupin's name and of course all the other characters call her Tonks after the marriage. Again I think it is an inaccurate representation of the character.

Anyone agree? - Vostok 04:42, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Their married names are the last known names for them, regardless of the name they were known by for the majority of the books, so they should be used. The page name has not been changed or moved, so anyone typing in Ginny Weasley or Hermione Granger will instantly get to the article. If this was the Wookieepedia, for instance, the page would have been immediately moved to the full new name, with the previous name redirecting. I see no need to do that, though, but this is an encyclopedia, so the current, full name should be used.
Luna's marriage was revealed by J.K. Rowling herself in a web chat on July 30th. I believe carries a transcript of it. - Cavalier One 23:01, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
It's never actually stated that they've taken their husband's names for one, and like Vostok said, it's really more of a minor footnote. John Reaves (talk) 03:33, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
While that may be true in the case of Hermione, Luna and Tonks, the epilogue to Deathly Hallows clearly states that Ginny is a Potter, as it references the family as the "five Potters". Again, though, the page name does not carry their married name in the title, only in the text. Even on the main Wikipedia, articles are changed to reflect new marital status. As an encyclopedia, we should include all pertinent information in the correct places, whether we like it or not. Failing that, we could always ask JK to confirm or deny the married names herself :) - Cavalier One 07:45, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Ahh, but the main wikipedia page does not have Ginny's name as changed in the article. I agree that the name of the article should not change so that anyone putting in their original names can get to the page but, I think the article itself should change to represent the end of books. It is clear that Ginny has changed her name so, it should not be changed back to "Weasley." as for the other women, until we know exactly what there names are we should leave them with their non-married names but, I do think we should state that it could possibly be the married name. 11:38 27 August 2007
We don't know that Rolf's last name is Scamander, just that he's Newt Scamander's grandson. 18:46, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

While I agree that we should include all pertinent information, we should also be careful not to include unsupported information that could prove to be incorrect. Hermione meekly giving up her own name seems unlikely, Luna's page has been changed to a surname we're not even sure her husband has himself, and Tonks was still called by her usual nickname even after her marriage so it still being her last name seems possible. We should focus on accuracy, otherwise the entries start to look like fan fiction. 16:09, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

It's clear that Ginny's final last name is Potter, but we don't know what the other girls' names were after their marriages. The main Wikipedia has them by their original names. I'm going to fix their pages here to match. PinkRibbons 16:30, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Given the recent moving of the Ginny and Hermione articles, and the subsequent reversions, I think that some thought should be given to protecting the pages by the admins. While I personally advocate for the use of full names in the article itself, I do not feel that moving the page to a different name is warranted. - Cavalier One 19:34, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
The main Wikipedia uses "move protection" so only admins can move the pages but everyone can edit them. If that's done, I hope the pages for Hermione, Ginny, Fleur, Tonks, Luna, etc. are protected under the original names. After all, the names they were born with are their real names, the ones they're listed under for genealogy purposes, such as family trees. Those are also the names by which most people would recognize them. Also, I moved Rolf's page because we don't know his full name yet, JKR didn't mention it in the interview. PinkRibbons 20:00, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Yeah. they shouldn't have put like Nymhadora Lupin and Luna Scamander and stuff like that. They really should preserve the old names.Patr0nus10 19:17, January 22, 2011 (UTC)

Please see Harry Potter Wiki talk:Policy#Married names so we can get this set as an official policy. John Reaves (talk) 14:33, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Layout Guide

I've been working on a sort of draft for a layout guide for us to go by. It would add more uniformity across all the pages and, I think, and make the wiki more professional in general. In addition, it would provide a starting place for users when creating new articles. This is just the first of a series of policy ideas I'm hoping to propose. But there'll be time for those after we've completed the layout guide.

Pretty much, I'm looking for any feedback on the guide, anything you like about it, hate about it, things you think should be changed/added/removed, my poor spelling and grammar, anything at all. I won't get insulted, I promise. Although I would prefer it if you do not just edit the page, it would be more beneficial to reply back here or use the discussing page so we can make a group decision on matters. Thanks a lot. -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 00:40, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Great Idea..I saw the Guide and it looks awesome and I'm not sure about why it wasn't thought of before but it might make the wiki more desirable.. and yes it will make it look more professional which will be really Good..I agree with DarkJedi613...--Cometstyles 00:48, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Having consulted with DarkJedi613 on this, I agree that it is definitely needed. A professional looking wiki benefits us all - I have already been using a version of the guide to layout my big article rewrites with some success. - Cavalier One 07:08, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
So I've added a sort of introduction to it. Besides that if there are not any changes someone wants to bring about I'll link to it off of the policy page, unless more discussion is needed. :) -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 00:34, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Articles on chapters

What are some opinions on chapter articles? John Reaves (talk) 21:31, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

I think they're fine (probably not necessary, but certainly not bad)...if they have information in them. They need more than just a list of characters. Like an entire plot summary, etc. -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 01:24, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Middle Names

Was reading Harry and Ginny's kid's articles today and found middle names have been added for James and Lily. Wondering if there was any source that I have missed where their middle names were said?Dbones2009 00:44, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

As far as I know they were never given. Its possible it was in one of Rowling's interviews, but I had never heard of them until I looked at the history of the pages. Also, kind of unrelated but Teddy Lupin was changed to "Ted Remus Lupin," that may be his full name - I'm not sure. Anyone have any info on that? -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 01:27, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
No source, as far as I know, gives James and Lily's middle names. Albus was the exception since the reader needed to see that Harry had forgiven and honoured Snape on some level. As for Teddy ... my personal view is that it should be Ted "Teddy" Remus Lupin since Ted is a formal name, and Teddy informal. - Cavalier One 07:07, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
I agree, if that is his full name it should be used (similar to Ginny's). I guess I missed that part of the DH. :) -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 12:10, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
The only thing is, Teddy's a little complicated. Lupin says they named him after Tonks father, which would imply that his "formal" name is Ted. But when toasting him, he calls him "Teddy Remus Lupin", implying that Teddy is his "formal" name. And he's always refered to as Teddy after that. Some argue that the name used to toast him is his full, formal name which leads to the confusion. I still hold to the view that he is Ted and "Teddy" is his nickname, much in the same vein as Ginevra and "Ginny". - Cavalier One 12:43, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
You'd think it would be Ted but then again it is JK Rowling we are talking about so it could be anything. I mean look at Ginny everyone thought it her full name was Virginia...Dbones2009 00:46, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Reference JKR website for a geneological chart of the Weasley family to include Harry and Ginny's children - James Sirius, Albus Severus and Lily Luna. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs).

Battle of Hogwarts

I've noticed that lots of pages say that it happened on May 23 but i cant find any evidence of this. I've changed the ones i can find to say just May but i just want to know if their is evidence for that date. Me_Potter_Fan 09:52, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

As far as I know there is no evidence for this date. Its probably some fans making educated guesses on the date by working out the timeline of the book from a certain established date such as Easter and working out how long Harry and co were at Shell Cottage by references in the text. It's still unofficial tho. - Cavalier One 09:56, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
Actually if you run the dates, you'll find the Battle of Hogwarts occurs very close if not on May 5. I'll come back and expand later.Dbones2009 19:20, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

To Do List

Can you delete/strike out something you've completed? With some additional help, I changed the layout to Hagrid's pets, and want to remove it from the list, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to. Cubs Fan2007 03:55, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

They're part of templates so it can be changed by editing the template {{Todolist}}. I've removed it. -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 04:36, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

What does it mean upload media files for Half-Blood Prince? As far as I'm aware, no images from filming have been released, so all that's left is the images from the book chapters, and that's already listed; it just seems redundant. - Cubs Fan2007 01:07, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

I know that at least one has been released--it was on mugglenet...-Matoro183 (Talk) 02:06, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Should there be a template for pages that are named by us, and not an official source? Plumber

Ones such as Durmstrang ship. Plumber 22:13, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
I revamped the Conjecture template to bring it in line with the Imageless template. The category is now also Articles with conjectural titles, rather than unofficial titles, to better identify with the template name. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 22:41, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Should we have a category for those only mentioned and not seen? Eloise Midgen, for example. Plumber

No, the {{Mentioned}} template applied to the Appearances section or infobox will suffice for that. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 22:33, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

behind the scenes

In wookieepedia, there is a "behind the scenes" section that allows a real world perspective at the end of the article. There seems to be various section in various articles on this wiki that are from a real world perspective. We should make them all consistant, maybe even make them all fall under the same headings. The most common headings I have seen are "entymology," "Encounters," and "muggle information." Could we just put all this info under the heading "muggle perspective" or something? I think the Admins need to make an official announcement on the front page. 17:45, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Please see the layout guide. A lot of pages have not been edited to conform to it yet. Please feel free to do so. Although I can't think of any articles off the top of my head that have an "Encounters" or "Muggle information" section??? So anyway, to answer your question - all article should have a behind the scenes section for out of universe stuff. -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 21:08, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Tone, spelling, neutrality, grammar

Hi, I'm new to this wiki, but I have some experience in Wikipedia. I believe a considerable number of articles here are in desperate need of improvement. Many seem like fan sites, the tone is displeasing, etc. However, as I have said, I am quite new, so the policies might be a bit different. Astroview120mm 01:59, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Welcome! We are aware of the problems here, and are working to fix them, but it's a big job and any help is appreciated. Please look over the Layout guide, and note that British spelling takes precedence over American since it is a British series. If you have any specific questions, queries or ideas, address them to myself or another administrator. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 08:43, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Dueling Club

How about we make a page with a Dueling Club? Users can then duel against each other, using any spell available. Effects may range from simple health-reducing spells, to charms to prevent certain types of spells, or hexes that reduce spell power... A detailed explanation can be read at User:4ndrepd/Dueling Club. Basically, each player has 100 health, and tries to reduce the other's to 0, using different spells. If you win a duel, you gain mastery, to unlock better spells. For example: at 0 mastery, where you begin, you can only use basic spells, whereas at higher levels, you can use spells as Sectusempra, Stupefy, etc. Discuss, and vote.

Pottermore Setting

It's probably a stupid question but at what time is Pottermore set; is it modern-day or 1991? I'm thinking 1991 because Dumbledore's name is listed in the header in the Hogwarts acceptance letter and Percy is in the written part about Gryffindor. Also, if it is 1991, would Robert Hilliard (Ravenclaw prefect) be the Unidentified Ravenclaw prefect, assuming that a boy and girl is selected from each house? Midas1994 18:37, August 16, 2011 (UTC)

a list of things

I think we should have a list of the things on the Harry Potter wiki.  For the simple reason that new people such as me want to make a new page but wouldn't want to make another page on someone, something or someplace.  I noticed a flaw in my idea and that flaw is if someone made a new page they would have to put that page on the list and for some people that could be a hassle.  I would appreciate it if you would consider this idea.

Thank you Dracomalfoyisawsome9.

this is an awesome idea! i love it! i just made a page on the carrows but i dont know if theres already one. :(
