Animated GIFs

Why are these used? Quite frankly, they are distracting from the article itself and they don't add anything. The articles already over use images to the point where someone with internet that is bandwidth limited might be intimidated by the website. Anyone else think that animated GIFs should not be used or at least used VERY sparingly? ValinKrai 18:55, July 20, 2011 (UTC)

I do not think GIFs should be banned; they add some value to articles. Yes, they can be distracting, but they have the ability to demonstrate actions described within the article in a way normal images cannot. - Professor Nerdy (Owl Post) (Contrib's) 00:48, November 21, 2014 (UTC)

There's a red-link on this page. I don't know what it is trying to point to, so I can't fix it myself, but it seems fairly important, so I thought I'd mention it. Lasaraleen Tarkheena (talk) 08:36, February 22, 2013 (UTC)

The red-link is Project:Images and media for deletion. Shall this be used anymore?  Harry granger   Talk   contribs 16:06, April 1, 2014 (UTC)

User uploads

So in my travels of trying to clean up the wiki's files, I have noticed that there are a large number of user pages on this wiki which are created by user's who don't actually contribute anything to the wiki and have uploaded a bunch of "fan" pictures to their userpage. This is against the userpage policy, as it states that userpages aren't a sole contribution to the wiki. Should the policy on uploading pictures solely for your userpage be changed so that if the file isn't in use on the wiki articles itself, the file will be deleted? --Sajuuk 12:30, February 26, 2016 (UTC)

Bumping, just in case this was missed. --Sajuuk 11:39, February 29, 2016 (UTC)
The portion of HPW:USER you are citing ("Your user page should not your primary contribution to this wiki") was meant to apply to users who consistently make a lot of modifications to their personal userpages while making little to no substantive contributions to articles on the wiki. It wasn't meant to apply to users who set up a userpage in their initial contributions to the wiki and then disappeared. Those people may very well return as productive contributors at some point in the future. As long as they don't show up again only to tinker with their userpage some more, it's not a problem.
As for user images, I'm for keeping the current policy of allowing users to upload up to three images for use solely on their userpages, but I'd support amending the policy to allow user images to be deleted due to inactivity. Something like, if the user in question hasn't been active on the wiki for a certain period of time (say, a year or two years), then it's okay to delete their user images for housekeeping purposes. Unless they've exceeded a certain edit threshold (3000-5000+ edits?), in which case I would argue that they're a notable part of the HP Wiki community, and not touching their userpage in the event they become inactive is both showing respect for their contributions and helping preserve the history of the wiki. I agree, it probably wasn't intended to refer to those who just make their userpage then leave. However, there are a lot of userpages I've found where that has happened and they've never returned (and probably won't, but stranger things happen :P).
I have no issue keeping the pages around, but will edit out any red links of long since deleted files where possible.
I agree with the point on deleting pics after a period of time, but only if the user has less than a set number of edits. I'd say around about 3000 edits is the point where you become a valued member, though I only have 1100 edits and are cleared valued (though I never intend on using my userpage as a fan profile, just to be used as a place to display my contributions/current projects and things like that :P). --Sajuuk 13:45, March 8, 2016 (UTC)
