Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be the final two films of the Harry Potter film series, based on the seventh book by J. K. Rowling. Due to the length of the story and a desire by the filmmakers to be more faithful to the novel, it will be split into two parts:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is the first film, covering the story from the beginning to the trio's capture by Snatchers.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II is the second film, covering the story from the Skirmish at Malfoy Manor to the Epilogue.

"Years ago, we briefly — and seriously — considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited — almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I'd finished — that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn't take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I'm sure some will think we're crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I'm really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo — in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans — for their loyalty all these years — to give them the best and most complete experience possible."

A two-part film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is planned. The film is to be split in two, with David Yates, who directed the preceding two films, directing both parts. The first part will be released in November 2010, and the second in July 2011. The films will be shot back-to-back, and treated as if it were one film. The idea to split the films had been around since the middle of 2007, but only really came into serious consideration after producer David Heyman was able to talk to writer Steve Kloves when the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike ended and Heyman had Rowling's approval. As of April 2009, Kloves is working on the script of second part.

On March 12, 2008, Warner Bros. confirmed that the movie would be split into two, to do justice to the book.David Yates, director of Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince will return to direct and Steve Kloves is going to write the screenplay. According to Warner Bros. executive Alan F. Horn it will allow "an extra hour and a half to celebrate what this franchise has been and do justice to all the words and ideas in the amazing story." Heyman described the workings behind the split: "Deathly Hallows is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that, after discussing it with Rowling, we came to the conclusion that two parts were needed." Due to the WGA strike, Kloves was not able to start work on the script until it ended.

Before David Yates was officially chosen to direct the film, others had expressed an interest in the job. Alfonso Cuarón, director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, had said that he would be "tempted" to return to direct.Guillermo del Toro, who passed on Prisoner of Azkaban, had expressed interest in directing Deathly Hallows, but an increased workload ruled him out of the project.

Heyman noted that the films will be a closer recreation of the books than the previous films because of the length a two-part adaptation entails.Daniel Radcliffe said: "This is a road movie, particularly in Part One of the film. People have been so used to seeing Harry Potter at Hogwarts and we're just not there for the first part of the film. That seems to have really freshened things up, and hopefully will get people seeing the films with fresh eyes again, because its just a totally different look when you're not just sat in the same room the whole time."

Although Yates had retained composer Nicholas Hooper for Half-Blood Prince, John Williams (who composed the scores to the first three films) had expressed interest in returning to score the film - however he did not state which part he would be contributing to. In January 2010 Alexandre Desplat, a french composer, was confirmed to produce the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I.

Yates and Heyman have noted that some of the events of this film had an effect on the way the sixth film was written.

The first part of Deathly Hallows will end as the trio are captured by the Snatchers, the second part of film begins as they arrive at the Malfoy Manor.

Daniel Radcliffe pretended to scare the fans when he said "There will be two films for Hallows, and if there isn't, I'm not returning to play Harry Potter."

The reason for two parts or films as David Heyman has stated is so there will be no major cuts in characters and scenes. This allows the adaptation to be more in depth than the other six films. It has been announced that these parts will be in 3-D in theaters after the success of Avatar.

Filming

Pre-production began on January 26, 2009, and filming began on February 19, 2009 at Leavesden Film Studios, where the previous six films had been shot, and Pinewood Studios. Eduardo Serra is the cinematographer. Yates said that the film will be shot "with loads of hand-held cameras. I want to shake things up every time I go into this world. I like experimenting as we go along."

During production at Leavesden, Radcliffe's stunt double David Holmes suffered a serious spinal injury, during filming of an aerial sequence. Holmes fell to the ground following an explosion which was part of the stunt. It is probable that the aerial sequence and explosion is the Battle over Little Whinging. This left Holmes paralyzed from the waist down and it is reported he will be unable to ever walk again.

Shooting's Schedule

David Heyman revealed work will begin in early 2009 on the seventh movie in the series.
"We finished the sixth film which'll be coming out next summer and we start filming the seventh which we'll be breaking into two parts for a 54 week shoot starting in February (2009)."

Test shoots were done on January 26, 2009 as Emma Watson revealed on her Official Website. Unfortunately, just days later it was reported that a stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe was seriously injured while testing an explosion scene.

Filming for both parts started officially on February 15, 2009 and will end in early July, 2010.

Filming on Location

• On April 21, 2009, photos of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) with a tent camped in a open field along with the Deathly Hallows staff and crew has been circling around the web. The report says that it was shot in Scotland.

• On the same day, The-Leaky-Cauldron.org first reported that location filming for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been set in Piccadilly Circus and Shaftesbury Avenue portion of London, England.

Hundreds of Photos of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint including the crew & staff & 200+ extras for the film production has been released on the net during shooting hours from midnight to 6 a.m. and on the next day, April 22.

• On April 22, BBC News reported the actual dates of Deathly Hallows filming on the coastline of Wales will take place May 11th through the 15th, 2009 on Freshwater West beach of the Pembrokeshire National Park where the scenes for Shell Cottage are said to be shot.

• On 24th of April, The T-L-C website released the first photos of the Shell Cottage while under construction on the coastline in the Pembrokeshire area of Wales.

• Various pictures can be seen of the cast of HP-DH filming scenes from the film on this Site. These are the Shell Cottage scenes, most likely.

• They started shooting the forest scenes at Swinley Forest on 10 June 2009.

• Numerous photos of the main casts including pictures of Sophie Thompson (Mafalda Hopkirk), David O'Hara (Albert Runcorn) and Steffan Rhodri (Reg Cattermole) along with the set reports from Deathly Hallows filming in Whitehall, London have emerged online since the 28 of June 2009, which appear to be the scene in which Harry, Hermione and Ron infiltrated the Ministry of Magic to obtain the Real Horcrux Locket from Dolores Umbridge.

• Stunt sequences for Deathly Hallows were shot Thursday (July 23) and Friday night (July 24) in Dartford tunnel in Kent, England, with Harry and Hagrid's doubles (Daniel Radcliffe and Robbie Coltrane were not filming) driving against the traffic on Sirius's motorcycle. This scene follows the Seven Potters escapade in Privet Drive; Harry's double is also noted to be pointing his wand at an unknown enemy. Photos from the location shoot has emerged online since 27th of July, 2009.

• According to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, which is hosting a Harry Potter Exhibition, some of David Thewlis' costumes were sent to the UK because Thewlis will need to wear them for the wedding scenes. This filming will begin on August 10, 2009.

Special Effects

• For the Seven Potters sequence, Oliver Phelps mentioned on his twitter that a mixture of special effects and makeup has been used to make the actors' face look like Daniel Radcliffe, using a VFX MOVA facial capture scan with 29 cameras and UV makeup.
• Harry Potter films' producer David Heyman, once revealed in a interview that they will also use a combination of make-up and computer effects to make Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright and Tom Felton look older for the Epilogue chapter. They are very similar to the special effects that were used in the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button starring Brad Pitt.

The Soundtracks

In January 2010, Alexandre Desplat, a french composer, was confirmed to produce the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I.

John Williams said he is confident he will return for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, although he did not say which part he would be contributing. There is not yet an official announcement made by WB or John Williams himself.

Nicholas Hooper (who composed the soundtracks for Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince) said he will not return for the last two Harry Potter films.

• Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter. Aged 17, Harry has left Hogwarts and is intent on destroying the remaining Horcruxes so as to rid the world of Voldemort for good.
• Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley. Also aged 17, Ron has left Hogwarts and is showing his loyalty and bravery by helping Harry destroy the remaining Horcruxes but still must deal with his insecurities.
• Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. Aged 17, almost 18, Hermione has left school to assist her friends Harry and Ron in destroying the remaining Horcruxes.

Hogwarts Staff

• Alan Rickman as Severus Snape. The current Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and murderer of Albus Dumbledore. Snape is loathed by non-followers of Lord Voldemort.
• Suzie Toase as Alecto Carrow. A loyal Death Eater now appointed to be the Muggle Studies teacher and Deputy Headmistress.
• Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall. The Professor of Transfiguration and the Head of Gryffindor House. She is a member of the Order of the Phoenix. She has been removed from her position of Deputy Headmistress at Hogwarts by Severus Snape. She is a member of the Order of the Phoenix
• Jim Broadbent as Horace Slughorn. The Potions teacher and the Head of Slytherin House.

• Natalia Tena as Nymphadora Tonks. Member of the Order of the Phoenix and Auror. She is newly married to Remus Lupin. She is also a metamorphmagus.
• Domhnall Gleeson as Bill Weasley. The eldest child in the Weasley clan and member of the Order of the Phoenix. After being attacked by Fenrir Greyback (who was not in werewolf form at the time), he suffers facial scars and develops some Werewolf tendencies such as a liking for very rare steaks. Also engaged to Fleur Delacour.
• Clémence Poésy as Fleur Delacour. A beautiful French woman who is a member of the Order of the Phoenix and engaged to Bill Weasley.
• Julie Walters as Molly Weasley. Member of the Order of the Phoenix and mother of the Weasleys. She greatly fears for the safety of her family as they become more and more wrapped up in the Wizarding War.
• Mark Williams as Arthur Weasley. Member of the Order of the Phoenix and father of the Weasleys. He is less protective than his wife and accepts sacrifices will be made in the Wizarding War.
• James Phelps as Fred Weasley. Member of the Order of the Phoenix, successful entrepreneur and twin brother of George Weasley.
• Oliver Phelps as George Weasley. Member of the Order of the Phoenix, successful entrepreneur and twin brother of Fred Weasley.
• Andy Linden as Mundungus Fletcher. Member of the Order of the Phoenix. He is something of a petty thief and not entirely trustworthy.
• Ciarán Hinds as Aberforth Dumbledore. Brother of Albus Dumbledore and owner of the Hog's Head.
• David Ryall as Elphias Doge. An elderly wizard who was good friends with Albus Dumbledore.

Lord Voldemort, his Death Eaters and followers

• Ralph Fiennes/Frank Dillane as Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort as adult/16 year old respectively. The Darkest Wizard of all time. He is intent on seizing power, spreading fear and destroying Harry Potter once and for all.
• Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange. A sadistic Death Eater, escaped from Azkaban. She is the sister of Narcissa Malfoy, and therefore, the aunt of Draco Malfoy and wholly worships Lord Voldemort.
• Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy. Recently escaped from Azkaban. His loyalty to Voldemort and sense of morality is becoming confused.
• Timothy Spall as Peter Pettigrew. Voldemort's cowardly servant who was responsible for restoring Voldemort to his body.
• Helen McCrory as Narcissa Malfoy. Wife of Lucius, sister of Bellatrix and mother of Draco. Her loyalty to Voldemort has become secondary to the safety of her son.
• Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy. Now aged 17, Draco has also left Hogwarts to assist the Death Eaters. His loyalty to Voldemort may be more an attempt at survival than actual conviction.
• Rod Hunt as Thorfinn Rowle. A Death Eater. Attacks Harry, Ron, and Hermione in a Cafe on Tottenham Court Road, along with Dolohov.
• Dave Legeno as Fenrir Greyback. A sadistic werewolf intent on causing havoc.
• Nick Moran as Scabior. The only Snatcher whose name is given besides Greyback.
• Richard Cubison as Antonin Dolohov. A Death Eater who attacks Harry and his friends at the café on Tottenham Court along with Thorfinn Rowle.

• Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge. Former Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher and Ministry of Magic employee. Though she is not a Death Eater, she gladly abides by their policies of torture and cruelty when they take over the Ministry.
• Chris Rankin as Percy Weasley. Proud and articulate, Percy Weasley remains estranged from his family. He and his family reunite during the Battle of Hogwarts
• Guy Henry as Pius Thicknesse. New Minister for Magic under Voldemort's control of the Ministry.

• Gornuk – A goblin who worked at Gringotts. He went on the run together with fellow goblin Griphook, Wizards Dean Thomas, Dirk Cresswell and Ted Tonks to avoid the Muggle-Born Registration Commission.
• Dirk Cresswell – A Muggle-born wizard who worked at the Ministry of Magic as Head of the Goblin Liaison Office. Killed by Snatchers while on the run from the Death Eater-controlled Ministry.
• Ted Tonks – A Muggle-born wizard, the husband of Andromeda Black, and the father of Nymphadora Tonks. Killed by Snatchers while on the run from the Death Eater-controlled Ministry.
• Andromeda Tonks – The wife of Ted Tonks and mother of Nymphadora.
• Augustus Rookwood – A spy at the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic who worked for Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War.
• Albus Severus Potter – The second son of Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley, who is starting his first year at Hogwarts; younger brother of James Potter and the older brother of Lily Potter.
• James Sirius Potter II – The oldest son of Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley, who is just beginning his second or third year at Hogwarts; older brother of Albus and Lily Potter.
• Lily Luna Potter – The youngest child of Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley; the younger sister of James and Albus Potter.
• Rose Weasley – The oldest child of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, she is the same age as her cousin Albus Potter is starting her first year at Hogwarts.
• Hugo Weasley – The youngest child and son of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, he is the same age as his cousin Lily Potter.
• Teddy Lupin (both 19-year-old and infant) – The only son of Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks and the godson of Harry Potter, he was raised by his grandmother, Harry and Ginny treat him like a son. He didn't inherit his father's lycanthropy, but he did inherit his mother's metamorphic abilities.
• Victoire Weasley – The oldest child of Bill and Fleur Weasley and is seen kissing Teddy Lupin.
• Scorpius Malfoy – The only child of Draco Malfoy and Astoria Greengrass and the same age as Albus Potter and Rose Weasley.
• Astoria Greengrass – A Pure-blood witch and the younger sister of Daphne Greengrass, she married Draco Malfoy with whom she had at least one child, a son named Scorpius.
• Mr. and Mrs. Evans – The muggle parents of Lily and Petunia, seen in Snape's memory bringing their youngest daughter to Platform 9 3/4.
• Augusta Longbottom – The grandmother of Neville Longbottom, who both fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. She has appeared in two books before Deathly Hallows, but never onscreen.
• Portrait of Phineas Nigellus Black - Former Hogwarts headmaster, now "living on" as connected portraits in the Headmaster's office and 12 Grimmauld Place, and who provides Harry, Ron, and Hermione with information while also communicating their whereabouts to Snape.
• Alicia Spinnet - an ex-student who participates in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Additional Casting

Many of the Death Eater actors are expected to return, such as Ralph Ineson (Amycus Carrow), Johnpaul Castrianni (Yaxley), Peter Best (Walden Macnair) and Tav MacDougall (Travers). Also, Lee Ingleby may return to his role of Stan Shunpike.

John Cleese, however, will not reprise his role as Nearly Headless Nick , Nina Young as of now, will not return as the Grey Lady.

Georgina Leonidas, Sean Biggerstaff, Luke Youngblood, Tiana Benjamin, and William Melling may reprise their roles as Katie Bell, Oliver Wood, Lee Jordan, Angelina Johnson, and Nigel Wespurt, respectively. Tony Maudsley may reprise his role as Grawp. And Tom Moorcroft could reprise his role as Regulus Black, in a flashback sequence for Kreacher's story.

Other students roles may be reprised by their respective actors as well, such as Louis Doyle as Ernie Macmillan, Charlotte Skeoch as Hannah Abbott, Edward Randell as Justin Finch-Fletchley, Ryan Nelson as Michael Corner, Nick Shirm as Zacharias Smith, Hugh Mitchell as Colin Creevey, and Eleanor Columbus as Susan Bones (who is unlikely to appear due to the fact that she is an American and her father is not directing the movies).

Other roles that may be reprised include, Alex Crockford as Charlie Weasley, George Harris as Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Sian Thomas as Amelia Bones.

Pete Perry and Louise Walpole may be playing Dedalus Diggle and Hestia Jones, respectively.

Rik Mayall who portrayed Peeves the Poltergeist in a deleted scene from the first movie could make his only appearance at the Battle of Hogwarts.

During an interview on the "Paul O’Grady Show" Zoë Wanamaker said she was disappointed that she was never asked to return as Madam Hooch and wouldn't mind doing so for the last movie or two movies.

Casting for young Severus Snape, Lily Evans, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Petunia Evans as well have yet to be announced; Alec Hopkins, Susie Shinner, and the other teenage kids in the flashback sequence in OOTP have yet to be comfirmed back as well.

As noted above, David Heyman has stated that special effects will be used to age the young actors for the "19 years later" epilogue, rather than casting older actors in the parts.

Cut roles

It was announced on August 9, 2009 that Jamie Waylett, who experienced legal difficulties earlier in the year, would not be returning for his role of Vincent Crabbe. Instead Gregory Goyle will cast the Fiendfyre curse and will die as a result.

In January 4, 2009, SnitchSeeker reported that Julie Christie and Shirley Henderson will not reprise their roles as Madam Rosmerta and Moaning Myrtle.

Staff and crew

Both parts will be written by Steve Kloves, who wrote the first, second, third, fourth, and sixth films, and directed by David Yates, who directed the previous two films. David Heyman and David Barron are producing both parts.

Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Eduardo Serra has been appointed to be the Director of Photography.

Special effects will supervised by Paul J. Franklin.

Stuart Craig will once again design new sets for both films. New sets include the Malfoy Manor, the Tonks' house, the wedding marquee, the Tottenham Court Road cafe, Sirius's bedroom at 12 Grimmauld Place, Dolores Umbridge's Ministry office, Ministry courtroom, the tent, Shell Cottage, Godric's Hollow, Bathilda Bagshot's home, the Lovegood home, the Lestrange vault in Gringotts, the Hog's Head, Ravenclaw Tower, and possibly other new parts of Hogwarts castle.

Wedding designer Jenny Packham is designing outfits for the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows film.

Differences from the books

• It has been announced that there will be a scene with the Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, making a speech about how times will "grow darker still" to Ministry employees.
• There will also be a scene with Neville, Luna, and Ginny on the Hogwarts Express.
• It is thought that a chase scene on land will be added into the Seven Potters fight sequence.
• It has been announced that Bill will be attacked during the Battle over Little Whinging.
• It has been hinted at that an extended wand battle between Umbridge and Harry will be included and a chase scene with the Snatchers will take place during the film's climax.
• Judging by filming pictures, Harry Potter will most likely not be disguised as "Barny Weasley" during the wedding.
• The Ron and Hermione kiss is thought to be changed to take place in the Chamber of Secrets.
• It has been announced that the character Vincent Crabbe will not appear in the movie due to the drug charges against actor Jamie Waylett, and that Gregory Goyle will die in his place.
• In an interview, director of the film David Yates announced that a scene will be added where Hermione Granger and Harry Potter are dancing, and, while dancing, they reveal some secrets about each other.
• In the film, Mr. Ollivander appears to be familiar with the Deathly Hallows, while in the book, he doesn't understand what the term means.
• Judging by filming pictures, a scene will be added where Hermione Granger leaves her home.
• It was announced recently at Mugglenet that Josh Herdman slipped the information that the division between the two parts of the Deathly Hallows film will occur after the trio is caught by the Snatchers, and that the Malfoy Manor part will happen at Part II.
• The use of characters omitted from previous films such as Bill and Charlie, Fleur, and Rufus Scrimgeour will likely require the addition of some exposition to explain their presence. In addition, some changes made for the Half-Blood Prince film, such as the circumstances of Harry hiding the potions textbook, and the destruction of the Burrow, may also result in some additions.
• Instead of disarming Stan Shunpike, Hedwig will sacrifice herself to protect Harry and reveal him to the Death Eaters.
• A recent trailer description said that Voldemort will be searching for Harry in the woods
• A trailer description also said we will see Quidditch pitch burn down
