Harry Potter and the Man of Unknown was the first story posted in the Harry Potter category on Fanfiction.net, making it one of the, if not the, oldest Potterverse fanfictions.[1]
The American author, Gypsy Silverleaf, wrote it before Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released in the United States, although Silverleaf revised Man of Unknown in 2001. The author only knew the title of the book and wrote the story without taking into account the events contained in it. Despite this, it presents some interesting facts which, read in retrospect, with the saga concluded are ironically prescient. The protagonist is Thomas Erwin, who has similar characteristics to the canon Severus Snape, the two were at school together, even if Thomas was a year before of the potion teacher. Despite having a mutual dislike they share a deep hatred for Harry Potter, albeit for different reasons. The revised version can be found on her website and on FictionAlley. [1]
It is precisely thanks to this story published on 4 September 1999 that Fanfiction.net has opened a section dedicated to Harry Potter.[2]
The story had a strong impact on the Harry Potter fandom and prompted some fans to create original characters (OC) based on Thomas Erwin.

Xing said yes and created the category. Three days later, I got an E-mail from him telling me to post my story or he'd delete the section. I have been in this fandom far too long."
