Haywood was a surname of a family with both Muggle and magical members.

Family history[]

The family were from London, but at some point they lived in Wigtown, Scotland, which led to Penny becoming a big fan of the Wigtown Wanderers Quidditch team. The family also owned a garden with red roses, which Penny tried to change to yellow.[2] They had a Christmas tradition of walking through the snowy forest near their home.[3]

At some point, Mr Haywood learned the game "White Hippogriff" while he was travelling abroad and taught it to Penny during her childhood playing the game with the family over Christmas.[4]

The sisters' step-grandmother Winifred challenged Penny and Beatrice with riddles during their childhood and brewed potions with Penny starting her interest in the subject and encouraged her to be more social when she was previously shy.[5]

Prior to the 1985–1986 or 1986–1987 school year, the family spent every summer in the countryside, where Penny had a Muggle friend called Scarlett Sparks, although Penny's memory of Scarlett was erased after Scarlett was attacked by a werewolf.[1]

Prior to the 1988–1989 school year, the family had a pet Puffskein which they shaved once a week on a Sunday. This made the sisters argue over how the hair should be used with Penny wanting to use it in potions and Beatrice wanting to use it to make works of art.[6] Penny once tried to teach it to roll over in place of a dog when she told Jacob's sibling they could not keep a crup as they are aggressive towards Muggles.[7] Beatrice made a toy puffskein out of its hair to give to Jacob's sibling as a gift when she first met them at the start of her first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[6]

During the 1988–1989 school year, the family went through a crisis when Beatrice disappeared and was found trapped in a portrait within her first few days at Hogwarts, gradually losing contact with reality and appearing to become weaker. This upset the rest of the family, with Penny briefly abandoning her studies out of depression and finding it hard to care about anything except her sister. Their parents considered withdrawing Penny from Hogwarts, furious that the school was not doing more to save Beatrice. After Beatrice was freed, she was heavily traumatised and spent the summer holidays "searching for herself", starting to read more grown-up books and acting older. By the start of the following school year, she developed a more sullen and rebellious personality, most likely with the coincidence of her adolescence, affecting her relationship with her family. This upset Penny that her sister, who had previously always been close to her, had now become distant from her[8] and their mother thought Beatrice was going through a phase.[9]

Etymology[]

Haywood is a habitational name from any of various places, for example in Herefordshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, and Staffordshire, so-called from Old English (ge)hæg "enclosure" + wudu "wood". It was a common practice in the Middle Ages for areas of woodland to be fenced off as hunting grounds for the nobility.

Penny is an English diminutive of the Greek name Penelope, which is derived from "pēnē" meaning woven cloth and "lepō" meaning "to peel", so basically Penny means "unravelling cloth". The name is most commonly associated with a character from Odyssey, by the ancient Greek author and poet Homer, who was a cunning weaver.

Beatrice is the Italian form of the Latin name Beatrix meaning "bringer of joy". The name was popularised by the poetry of Dante Alighieri about the Florentine woman Beatrice Portinari.

Winifred is an anglicisation of the Welsh name Gwenffrewi meaning "fair stillness".
