The Head of Gryffindor House was a Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with the specific role of looking after the students in their House. It is unknown how a professor would be elected for the post, but it's most likely that the Headmaster chose the professor who embodied all the qualities Godric Gryffindor himself had (bravery, daring, conscientiousness, etc.) and was in Gryffindor House when he/she was at Hogwarts.[2][3]
Every portrait in Gryffindor Tower depicted a current or former Head of Gryffindor.*Head of Gryffindor House.[4]
History
The Head of House before and during Harry Potter's time was Minerva McGonagall.[5] Minerva became the Head of House possibly when she was appointed Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, taking over Albus Dumbledore's previous teaching position when he became Headmaster. After the Second Wizarding War, Neville Longbottom was known to have taken over the job as Head of Gryffindor.[4]
