This cauldron was owned by Helga Hufflepuff, and was passed down through the centuries after her death as her artefact, the equivalent of the Sword of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw's Diadem and Salazar Slytherin's locket. Sometime during the 20th century, Tom Riddle acquired her cauldron and made it into a Horcrux. The cauldron was eventually discovered and destroyed by Harry Potter or one of his allies.
Behind the scenes
- J. K. Rowling originally considered making Hufflepuff's hallow a cauldron, but felt it would be too large and heavy to be believably carried around by Harry on his hunt for Horcruxes, and the cauldron was changed into a cup. It is unclear at which stage this change was made, and it is therefore possible that Hufflepuff's cauldron would have been owned by Hepzibah Smith, made into a Horcrux with her murder, kept in the Lestrange Vault and destroyed by Hermione Granger with a fang from the Serpent of Slytherin, as its replacement cup was.
