Hellebore is a flowering plant used in Herbology and as an ingredient in Potion-brewing. Syrup of Hellebore is a substance extracted from the Hellebore plant.[1][2] Many species of the Hellebore plant are highly poisonous.
History[]
During the 1988–1989 school year, Professor Pomona Sprout taught her fifth-year Herbology students about Hellebore. After class, Jacob's sibling helped Penny Haywood grab some Syrup to help her brew some Draught of Peace.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- Hellebore is a flowering or herbaceous plant that was used in traditional, early European medicine to treat paralysis, gout, and insanity. However, many varieties of hellebore are toxic, and can cause symptoms ranging from vertigo to cardiac arrest. Some historians believe that Alexander the Great died of a hellebore overdose. In legend, it was believed to be used by witches to summon demons.
