Herbert Chewsworthy III was a dog owned by the centenarian wizard Elton Elderberry.

Herbert and Elton in the Ministry All-Purpose Room

Elton could often be found talking to Herbert about magical topics in the Ministry All-Purpose Room in the British Ministry of Magic, such as Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. During the 1990–1991 school year, Olivia Green and Jacob's sibling sought Elton at the Ministry, as they wished to ask him for information about the Crown of Mneme. When they met Elton, Elton introduced Herbert to Jacob's sibling, as Herbert seemed reluctant to.

Elton was coversing with Herbert again at the Ministry about Degas's art and badminton, the latter of which Elton said Herbert had no interest discussing, as he lacked thumbs. Herbert soon after accompanied Olivia and Jacob's sibling in the Ministry of Magic Archives with Elton, where he showed them where important documents were kept.

Herbert was with Elton in the Archives when Jacob's sibling approached him again for a question. Herbert was rather excited to see them again. Elton lectured Herbert for having eaten the last of the blueberry scones. Elton had Herbert bring Jacob's sibling a file that they wanted to study.

When Jacob's sibling again entered the archives to share extremely important information with Elton, Herbert went up to play with them, but they had to decline as they were busy.

Physical description

Herbert was a grey and white haired dog, with brown eyes and a brown nose. He appeared to be quite old in the early 1990s given his aged appearance.

Personality and traits

Herbert had a playful and friendly temperament. He also followed his master's commands. Elton claimed Herbert could speak with about academic topics of conversation, but as he was never seen speaking, it is possible Elton was simply talking to himself.

Behind the scenes

• A glitch caused Herbert to be invisible in some versions of the game, however, this has since been fixed and he is now visible at least in Volume 2 of Beyond Hogwarts in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.
