The Highlands is a historic region of Scotland, to the north-west of the Highland Boundary Fault, which crosses mainland Scotland in a near-straight line. The area is generally sparsely populated, with many mountain ranges, and includes the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis.[2]
Known locations[]
Hogwarts Castle, located "not far" from Dufftown,[3] was located in the Scottish Highlands, as is located the only all-wizarding village of Hogsmeade.[4] Minerva McGonagall, Headmistress of Hogwarts School, was raised in the Scottish Highlands, in Caithness.[1]
The Highlands are also the site of many lakes and other bodies of water, such as Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, and the Great Lake. Herbologist Hadrian Whittle wrote a book on the magical flora of the lochs in the Highlands, titled Magical Water Plants of the Highland Lochs.[5] The Vale of McGowan is also the site of a spring.
