The Highlands is a historic region of Scotland, to the north-west of the Highland Boundary Fault, which crosses mainland Scotland in a near-straight line. The area is generally sparsely populated, with many mountain ranges, and includes the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis.
Hogwarts Castle, located "not far" from Dufftown, was located in the Scottish Highlands, as was located the only all-wizarding village of Hogsmeade. Minerva McGonagall, Headmistress of Hogwarts School, was raised in the Scottish Highlands, in Caithness.
The Highlands are also the site of many lakes and other bodies of water, such as Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, and the Black Lake. Herbologist Hadrian Whittle wrote a book on the magical flora of the lochs in the Highlands, titled Magical Water Plants of the Highland Lochs. The Vale of McGowan was also the site of a spring.
