The History of Magic Classroom (designated Classroom 4F) was where History of Magic classes were taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was located on the first floor of Hogwarts Castle, adjacent to the North Hall.

Description

During the 1890–1891 school year there was a set of three stained glass windows in the classroom which depicted Merlin, the Hogwarts founders, and five warlocks who were part of the International Warlock Convention of 1289.

At some point after the Headmaster's passing in 1996, a portrait of former headmaster Albus Dumbledore was mounted on the wall high above the professor's desk, with the painted likeness being able to traverse that frame and its counterpart in his former office.

History

Professor Binns's early career

When Cuthbert Binns became professor of History of Magic, he was given Classroom 4F to teach in. He filled the room with books on history, and kept a Draconifors spellbook locked in a side-room, protected with minor magical defences. After his death, it was noted by students that the most exciting parts of his lessons was when he glided through the blackboard and into the room.

1988–1989 school year

During the 1988–1989 school year, the First Task of the All-Wizard Tournament took place in this classroom.

Later during this school year, Jacob's sibling, Bill Weasley and Merula Snyde spoke to Binns in this classroom, to ask him for help locating Peeves, but he instead waffled on about Goblin rebellions. The three students later asked him information about dragons and Portkeys in this classroom when they were planning to enter the Buried Vault.

1989–1990 school year

During the 1989–1990 school year, Jacob's sibling spied on Madam Pince having a conversation with Binns in the classroom under their Invisibility Cloak. Pince had to wake Binns up to talk to him, who was asleep at his desk.

Inter-House occupants

During the 1991–1992 school year, this class had a clock, a globe and a blackboard. It also had a capacity of eight students. The last day of the course the room was occupied by a Gryffindor student and a Ravenclaw student.

1992–1993 school year

During the 1992–1993 school year, after the Writing on the Wall had announced the re-opening of the Chamber of Secrets, second year Gryffindor students inquired Professor Binns about the legend of the Chamber during a lesson. He proceeded to inform them about the history of the four Hogwarts founders and the legend of the Chamber, including the "horror within".

Borrowed by Remus Lupin

During the 1993–1994 school year, Remus Lupin used Classroom 4F for his Anti-Dementor lessons with Harry Potter. He presumably asked for Professor Binns's permission beforehand.

Professor Gorski teaching History of Magic

During the 2009–2010 school year, the visiting professor Jakub Gorski used Classroom 4F while teaching History of Magic, a time during which he unbeknownst to the castle's other residents was actually being controlled by a Dark wizard named Bly by means of the Imperius Curse, who forced him to use his position into tricking students to help him locate a precious family heirloom hidden at the school.

Behind the scenes

• Classroom 4F did not appear in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as the Astronomy Room was used for the Anti-Dementor lessons instead. However, the room was included in the video game adaption and used for Harry and Lupin's Anti-Dementor lessons.
• The History of Magic Classroom appeared only in the books and first three PS2 video games, and PC for the third. It has made no appearances in any of the film adaptations, though it was mentioned briefly on the Marauder's Map as History of Magic Classroom in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and by Minerva McGonagall as History of Magic in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
• Due to Hogwarts' every-changing abilities this classroom is located on the fourth floor in the first three video games for consoles, however it is unknown where it was located in the third game for PC, as Harry isn't seen going to this location.
• The classroom had a capacity of eight students; it is unknown how that would fit was the other students in the classroom.
